Noted for his cult blockbuster career and for building and promoting the mass image of several of these high-profile heroes, the director was faced with the challenging task of making SlumDog even before it debuted. It is from a couple of years prior, his very image as a “kingmaker,” that Puri Jagannadh identified himself as a filmmaker that brought commercially successful movies and transformed on-screen types by popular leads.

Until recently, his way of telling a story, his quick-moving storylines and his gut-wrenching characters helped make him one of the industry’s most coveted directors. However, that’s also probably not how it’s going, it seems. SlumDog is allegedly now struggling to acquire buyers for non-theatrical rights, notably on OTT channels.

Digital streaming deals are of major importance indeed to any modern movie’s stream of income. Lack of excitement on the part of OTT companies has taken some edge off the potential release of the film. But the move makes for a sharp decline for one filmmaker who once paid a huge price for the work. Puri Jagannadh-related projects would generate “t buzzing,” big-ticket deals in theaters or satellites or digital platforms. But this current scenario is also emblematic of a film industry where in its unpredictable nature in most cases, success and failure tend to be tied together.

Shifting audiences’ tastes, and competition, have led many especially from streaming services to limit what they watch. Movies nowadays are evaluated not only on star power but also on freshness and narrative power and wider appeal. This transformation can also be hard for even established filmmakers in maintaining a record of success. Still, in the fans’ and insiders’ quarters, optimism ripples. And so many people think SlumDog would stand up if it just had good shit to give.

Puri Jagannadh, sure, is a master of surprise and the capacity for recovery with an eye on storytelling. The director’s odyssey is a reminder that the film economy isn’t fixed; just like the average man, the best movies must evolve.

We’re headed to the next difficult chapter even before it and as soon as possible have an opportunity to reinvent ourselves for once. In anticipation everybody is focused on SlumDog and the possibility of its a makeover or not for Puri Jagannadh now that there won’t be any problem with a revival. A successful revival may bring back the future life of this whole film, but it might also confirm that now the director has his place in the film industry.
