Bengaluru Vehicle Towing: GBA to Charge Extra Ground Rent for Towed Vehicles; Bikes May Cost ₹1,350, Cars ₹1,700

Bengaluru motorists may soon have to pay more if their cars are towed for parking violations. The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has reportedly decided to charge vehicle owners an extra ground rent when traffic police tow and park their vehicles on GBA land or public spaces.

As per the reported decision, two-wheeler owners may have to pay ₹200 as ground rent and four-wheeler owners ₹500. The decision was reportedly taken at an executive committee meeting of GBA held by Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda.

The move is to raise more revenue for the civic body but could also increase how much motorists have to pay when their cars are towed after being caught in no-parking zones.

GBA Plans Additional Charges for Towed Vehicles

Under the proposed scheme, vehicles impounded by traffic police for parking violations could be parked on footpaths or vacant spaces owned by GBA. The authority will collect ground rent from them.

The additional amount will be recovered from vehicle owners by the traffic police along with existing traffic fine and towing charges.

This means motorists may have to pay three separate amounts to get their vehicles back:

  • Traffic violation fine
  • Vehicle towing charges
  • Additional ground rent payable to the GBA

The decision could make parking violations much more expensive for Bengaluru residents — especially in busy commercial areas where it can be difficult to find authorised parking spaces.

Bengaluru Vehicle Towing Charges: How Much Will You Pay?

The figures in the report are as follows: “Total charges for recovery of a towed vehicle” are estimated to be as follows:

Charge Details Two-Wheeler Four-Wheeler
Traffic Fine ₹500 ₹500
Towing Charges ₹650 ₹1,000
Ground Rent ₹200 ₹200
Total ₹1,350 ₹1,700

Under these figures a two-wheeler owner could end up paying ₹1350 and car owner may have to pay ₹1700 to retrieve the vehicle.

The additional ground rent is on top of the existing fine and towing charges, so motorists pay more overall.

Decision Taken at GBA Executive Committee Meeting

The decision was taken in an executive committee meeting of the Greater Bengaluru Authority presided over by Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda.

The proposal is that money be collected for the use of GBA-owned spaces where traffic police tow vehicles. The authority is said to be looking at it as another source of revenue.

Implementation details (collection process and charges) will be important for motorists to know once the official order is issued.

More Financial Pressure on Bengaluru Motorists?

The ground rent has raised concerns about rising costs of parking violations in Bengaluru — motorists who park in prohibited areas may now face traffic fines, towing fees and civic authority charges too.

The development also reminds people of parking regulations and using designated parking spaces (crowded areas of the city).

For Bengaluru residents, the question is how this additional charge will be implemented and whether the final rates will vary by vehicle category.

Motorists should wait for the official GBA notification before assuming that the proposed charges have come into effect.
