The world’s South Korean acting community, as well as the world’s fans, are grieving the sudden death of actor Jung Eun-woo. Renowned for his magnetic turns in dramas including Bride of the Sun and My Only One, he died in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The Final Message: "Missed, Envious, Regrettable"
What has also intensified the collective grief is a touching and cryptic social media post which the actor uploaded to his social media platform only 24 hours before he died. Jung Eun-woo was joined in a visual act of public mourning for artists who also lost their lives on February 10 when he posted photos of himself alongside the famous music star Leslie Cheung, a native of Hong Kong, and the British singer Amy Winehouse.
His caption reads: "Missed, envious, regrettable..PIR.BG," which has led to lots of fan speculation and soul searching. Some have read the “envy” possibly as an allusion to the forever peace the late artists knew, while “PIR.BG” is an unexplained acronym. And of course the profile picture at this final post was reportedly used for his portrait at the funeral wake.
A Career of Versatile Roles
Born in 1986, Jung Eun-woo made his debut in 2006 with KBS youth drama Rounding Off Season 3. Over a two-decade career, he became a major star of Korean television:
- Rising Star: In 2013, he skyrocketed to fame for his leading role in One Well-Raised Daughter.
- Awards: He won the New Star Award at the 2012 SBS Drama Awards and the Special Acting Award in 2013.
- Final Work: His most recent performance is in the 2021 film Memory: Manipulated Murder, which represents a bittersweet end to his artistic career.

An actor's family has asked for privacy in this challenging process. His wake is currently being held at the New Goryeo Hospital Funeral Hall in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province.
