A Bollywood actress, Taapsee Pannu, has taken the time to send a message to women who struggle with body image issues: Don’t put so much pressure on your stomach for perfect flatness on social media.
In fact, the actress revealed that at the time she was so obsessed with having a flat midriff, even when she already had a very flat midsection, even if she was physically fit in her body. Looking back, she admitted to her desire for an idealised body shape; she found herself wanting to get the perfect body to have a flat midriff at a time in life, and now that she was an unrealistic ideal of her body and that she pushed her body to a fitness level that it was her goal, she was not healthy for it.
"I was very fit as a child, but I didn’t understand why the lower part of my stomach wasn’t flat,” Taapsee said. “I was determined to have that flat belly, so I started working out way too much. I was putting a lot of stress on my body."
The actress explained that excessive exercise can have the opposite effect. When the body is pushed beyond its limits, it may retain water as a protective mechanism.
"When we punish our bodies too much, the brain sends signals that the body needs protection. As a result, the body starts holding on to water. What we see in the lower abdomen area is not just fat; it can also be water retention. Overtraining can actually make the problem worse rather than helping it disappear," she said.
Taapsee said her understanding of women’s health evolved only after years of struggle and frustration. She said nutritionist Munmun Ganeriwal helped her to understand the biological reason behind the natural shape of the female body.
The actress said about female anatomy: “Every woman’s body is different, and comparing oneself to unrealistic beauty standards can be harmful."
"It took me a long time to understand this. Every woman's body is naturally different. Only after doing so much physical stress did I realise the truth," she said.
Taapsee said fat and water retention in the lower abdominal region are normal and beneficial for women. According to her, this area offers natural protection for reproductive organs and is a significant part of good body structure.
She said that so many women feel pressure to have the unrealistic images they see online, especially on Instagram, where edited photos and idealised body types dominate.
In a note to women, the actress said, “You should concentrate on health and happiness and not on an ideal picture.”
Hence, a slight bulge in the stomach area is completely natural and healthy. Please don't torture your body just so your pictures look perfect on Instagram," she said.
Taapsee’s comments have resonated with so many women who are increasingly weighed down by social media’s beauty expectations. Her message is that fitness must be about health, strength, and self-care and not an obsession with the things you feel that are expected to be done to meet your standards.
With her own experience, the actress aims to encourage women to embrace their bodies, put the health of the body first, and not go on extreme fitness that is harmful to their health and not good.
