The cult horror film Tumbbad is finally getting its much-awaited sequel. Production of Tumbbad 2 started with a traditional muhurat ceremony in Mumbai, which marks the start of a project that promises to be bigger and darker than the original. So many fans of the 2018 movie have been waiting for this moment, especially after the film’s re-release in 2024 brought back interest and desire for more.
A haunting motion poster accompanied the announcement. The poster teased the return of the creepy goddess statue which haunted audiences in the first film and also the character of Vinayak Rao played once again by Sohum Shah. The visuals set the tone for what is expected to be another chilling journey into folklore, greed and supernatural horror.
The setting of shooting will be a huge custom-built set on Madh Island in Mumbai on which a lot of the action will take place, and the set will be spread across 7 to 8 acres, to capture the dark, haunted atmosphere that made Tumbbad so special. The production schedule is ambitious with over 200 days. The size of the movie is indicative of the filmmakers’ aspiration to make a sequel bigger and more immersive than the first movie.
Tumbbad 2’s cast has a mix of familiar and new faces. Sohum Shah returns as Vinayak Rao, keeping the film intact. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Nimisha Sajayan are both playing character roles in that film, so it will bring in a lot of stars. Adesh Prasad will be the director and aims to expand the world of Tumbbad while staying true to its roots in Indian folklore and horror.
As a new movie, Tumbbad was not a big box office winner at first but it became an instant cult hit based on word of mouth. It was one of the best blends of mythology, atmospheric visuals, and themes of greed. The 2024 remaster was the first time to make the film available to an audience and it made people go back to see it again and again.
With Tumbbad 2 the filmmakers are promising a bigger canvas, more complex storytelling and deeper exploration of the supernatural elements that made the original film unforgettable. For fans, this sequel is not just another horror movie, it is the continuation of a story that has become a landmark in Indian cinema.
So in short, Tumbbad 2 is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious Indian films of the past couple of years. With a huge set, star-studded cast and haunting visuals, it will carry on the tradition of a movie that changed horror in India.
