As the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections are wrapping up, Tamil film Jana Nayagan, played by Vijay, stands on the brink of its own credit. After the polls are complete and the results are expected shortly, industry insiders expect Jana Nayagan, long postponed, to come to the screen sooner rather than later.
But the film has been criticised and mired in disbelief for months. When Jana Nayagan was about to be released in January, surprisingly, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) declined certification at the final minute. However, the filmmakers got in court and got a pass on it, and the clearance was postponed a second time indefinitely, leading to a lengthy delay.
The film languished for nearly four months after producers repeatedly posted offers using lawyers and the media team to claim it. But considering the elections have ended, however, the only current obstacle, which held the movies back and led to their delayed release, seems to be over for good.
The delay in the film's release has been widely reported to have had political undertones. If Jana Nayagan had appeared before the elections, they would have changed voters' minds and made Vijay more popular; to get involved in politics, he has to be the newbie.
Thus, some political interests were apparently happy to wait until after polling was done for the film to come out. Timing for when the film will finally launch and where it’ll go is key. If it rolls out on the big screens ahead of the election’s ruling, it would still help boost the surging popular interest in Vijay’s political debut. Or, a post-results release could carry risks, particularly if the actor-turned-politician makes the wrong turn and harms his audience perception.
It’s put financial pressure on the film’s producers. The movie not only got the certification and ran the film, but also received a fair amount of negative publicity, with leaked clips flying around social media and a deduction from potential revenue. Such problems are seriously behind the team at this time, but they are still hopeful and waiting for final clearance.
It was written and directed by H. Vinoth; Jana Nayagan stars Pooja Hegde and Mamitha Baiju. Anirudh Ravichander wrote the music for the film, and fans are looking forward to the show. It is not just that, the film has been so ardently marketed as Vijay’s last action before he embarked upon politics, that it simply ramped up fan interest more for real fandom.
Fans of Tamil Nadu and beyond in the wider world have been counting on it in every nook and cranny of Tamil Nadu for as long as they can remember to watch their once-in-a-lifetime favourite film star. Now that the politics of the situation are subdued to the essentials, folks are watching a film on hold, watching for it to come out formally. If cleared, Jana Nayagan would be one of the year’s most talked about releases and a method of merging cinema and politics that has never been done before.
