The way to the silver screen has been rocky for Jana Nayagan’s producers. Even after finishing all post-production procedures and submitting the movie for approval weeks ago, the absence of a formalised censor certificate has disrupted the release and advance booking of the movie in Tamil Nadu.
The Root of the Conflict
The CBFC reportedly watched the movie on Dec 19, 2025. After the first premiere, the board's recommendations for minor cuts and changes to specific dialogue, which were probably based on the film's hefty politics, are said to have been based on the information obtained. Reports indicate the production house, KVN Productions, took these and resubmitted the film, but the final clearance has not been issued. This delay is unusual in a film of this weight and particularly one with a superstar like Vijay, whose foray into politics via his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has made the film a sensitive subject matter.
Legal Action on the Horizon?
The uncertainty has sent a chill through the film’s crew and exhibitors. Industry insiders said they were now weighing legal options, including bringing up urgent proceedings before the High Court if nothing is done by tonight. On top of that, if the certificate doesn't turn out before tonight, that delay will cost their team crores in potential pre-release business with an enormous logistical undertaking in thousands of theaters worldwide.
Political Backlash and Allegations
But the delay has rapidly become political. TVK Joint General Secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar publicly criticized the silence of the CBFC claiming that the delay was a "deliberate attempt" to stifle a growing political voice. Although a U/A certificate was proposed a number of weeks ago by the regional board, the document is being withheld for no apparent reason, he said.
Impact on Advance Bookings
Advance bookings for Jana Nayagan have achieved record numbers in Karnataka, Kerala and overseas markets, but they are still largely closed within Tamil Nadu. Theater owners do not want to open ticket counters without the certificate in hand so that they do not find themselves in the dire situation of last minute cancellations or refund mess if additional edits are required.
Will it Release on Jan 9?
So far, the team is hopeful. One option is to agree to a resolution by late Tuesday evening allowing bookings to be opened by Wednesday morning. But if the standoff festers, it’s possible the “Power Star’s” last movie debut could start too late — a problem fans and box office reps are anxious to sidestep.
