Mumbai Heatwave: Temperatures Near 38°C as Rain Is Forecast for Delhi-NCR and South India

Mumbai is experiencing unusually high temperatures in October, with the mercury reaching 37.8°C on Wednesday, October 14. Its temperature was 4.1°C above the seasonal average, which led the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert for the third consecutive day.

On Thursday, October 15, changing weather conditions are expected in some parts of India. Delhi-NCR is forecast to get rain and thunderstorms, and parts of South India could experience heavy to very heavy rainfall as the northeast monsoon begins.

Mumbai Weather: temperatures remain above normal.

Mumbai has seen a long period of unusually hot weather, with temperatures well above normal for October. The maximum temperature on Wednesday was 37.8°C, the IMD report said. The weather department also issued a yellow alert for the third consecutive day as the city remained under heatwave conditions.

The heat can lead to discomfort for people going out in the afternoon. Residents should stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and take breaks when it is warmer and in the sun.

Whether rain will bring any immediate relief to Mumbai remains uncertain. The prediction information from the city is very heatwave-like, but does not imply that it is likely to rain quickly enough to slow down the temperature.

Delhi-NCR Weather: Rain, Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Expected.

Delhi and neighbouring areas like Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad will experience changing weather on Thursday.

According to the IMD forecast by The Economic Times, rain, thunderstorms and lightning are expected on October 15. Winds may reach 40 to 50 kilometres per hour and gusts may reach 60 kilometres per hour. Rain is also expected on October 16 and drier conditions are expected from October 17.

The change in weather can bring temporary relief from the hot weather, but thunderstorms and strong winds could disrupt traffic, outdoor activities, and local travel. Residents should follow the weather warnings, especially in the presence of heavy rains and thunderstorms or lightning.

South India Weather: Heavy Rain likely in several areas.

Parts of southern India are likely to get heavy rainfall as the northeast monsoon gets underway.

The IMD has forecast isolated very heavy rainfall over Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on October 15. Rainfall activity is expected to continue in parts of the southern peninsula over the following days.

The northeast monsoon is an important source of rainfall in southeastern India, especially Tamil Nadu and the region around it. Its onset is usually accompanied by increased rainfall across much of the region, and the timing of the rainfall varies from place to place.

People in areas with heavy rainfall warnings should be on alert for possible waterlogging, localized flooding, traffic delays, and thunderstorms.

Why is the weather different in India?

India is experiencing different weather patterns at the same time. Mumbai is experiencing unusually high temperatures, while rain and thunderstorms are expected in parts of northern and southern India.

The IMD has indicated that the southwest monsoon is pulling away from the rest of the country as conditions become favorable for the northeast monsoon over the southern peninsula.

This seasonal change can bring contrasting conditions across regions. Some areas may continue to experience hot weather, while others receive rain, thunderstorms, or strong winds.

Rainfall forecasts can change as weather systems develop. The timing and intensity of showers might also differ between neighboring cities, so a city's weather forecast is important to check with the latest city-specific forecast rather than assuming that rain forecast in one part of the country will correspond to rain in another.

What should local residents do to prepare for the heat in Mumbai?

In Delhi-NCR and southern states under rain warnings, residents should watch out for lightning, strong winds, and waterlogged roads. Those traveling should allow extra time for travel and follow local traffic and weather updates.
