The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast shows mainly dry weather but the city’s air quality is also in the spotlight.

Mumbai’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) rose to 97 on Tuesday morning, which would place it in the satisfactory category under the national AQI classification. Residents may need to be more careful when they venture out, especially in the afternoon when temperatures will be high.

The weather forecast has indicated that temperatures in Mumbai will rise throughout the day with the afternoon hitting 35°C to 37°C depending on the location. The minimum temperature is expected to remain around 25°C which means the early morning and late evening are relatively cooler.

Tuesday does not get rain, so residents should not expect relief from the heat by showers. Although Mumbai is likely to be a city of hazy sunshine, the coastal area, central Mumbai and the suburbs might be different.

The warm weather will also affect commuters, outdoor workers, delivery workers and people walking in the afternoon will be affected by the heat. Residents should keep hydrated, dress light and wear comfortable clothing, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day.

People who need to spend extended periods outdoors can also benefit from taking breaks in shaded or cooler places. Carrying water and planning a trip around the peak afternoon temperatures can also help reduce discomfort.

Air quality is also key in Tuesday’s weather update. Mumbai’s AQI of 97 falls into the satisfactory category under India’s national air-quality classification. Traffic pollution, construction activity, dust and local weather patterns play a role in the variation of the air quality in Mumbai but it still is not bad enough to call it poor.

Residents with respiratory conditions should be aware of local air-quality readings and avoid outdoor activity if pollution is going up. AQI readings can vary from one neighbourhood to another so it shouldn’t be viewed as a one-size-fits-all measure for all parts of the city.

The dry spell also means residents need to keep planning their day-to-day activities around the heat, and not to expect rain to lower temperatures. Motorists and pedestrians will be more uncomfortable while travelling on exposed roads, particularly in the midday and afternoon hours.

People using public transport or waiting outdoors should look for shaded areas whenever possible. Outdoor workers at businesses and workplaces may also need to ensure that drinking water and rest breaks are available.

Mumbai’s weather on October 27 will be hot, dry, sunny to hazy with some places seeing temperatures of 37°C and a morning AQI reading of 97. The lack of expected rainfall means that heat management will be important throughout the day.

Residents need to monitor the weather forecast and neighbourhood air-quality information for any changes. While the reported AQI is in the satisfactory category, taking reasonable precautions against heat and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can help make the day more comfortable.
