Rahul Gandhi’s Elon Musk Exchange Triggers BJP Attack Over Starlink’s India Entry

The political debate over Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service has intensified after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke to the SpaceX chief about the delay in the company’s commercial launch in India. BJP leaders seized the opportunity to accuse Congress of inconsistency in its position on foreign billionaires and the government’s treatment of big business interests.

The debate began when Musk asked why Starlink had not applied for the final approval from the Indian government for its commercial operations. Gandhi had a pointed reply: “I invite Musk into India and let him know soon he will meet another powerful person like him.” Musk thanked Gandhi and said that the situation was very scary and this was an interesting political flashpoint.

BJP leaders later criticized Gandhi, saying that the Congress’s position on Starlink appeared different from its earlier criticism of the government on foreign business interests. The remarks have added a political dimension to an ongoing regulatory debate about satellite internet services, competition and the approvals required to operate in India.

BJP Accuses Congress Of Changing Its Position

BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari criticised Congress for what he described as a contradiction in its attitude with regard to foreign billionaires. He contrasted the party’s earlier criticism of the government’s alleged favouritism of foreign billionaires with Gandhi’s recent comments on the delay in Starlink’s entry into India.

Bhandari also accused Gandhi of compromising national interests for political reasons. These were political allegations made by the BJP spokesperson, rather than established findings about the Congress’s position or the government’s regulatory decisions.

BJP leader Jaiveer Shergill also took aim at the Congress, claiming that the party’s stance on Starlink changed depending on the political condition. In a social media post, Shergill contrasts criticism of the government for allegedly favouring Starlink with the delay in approving the service.

In a personal swipe at Gandhi, Shergill used the term Intelligence-Link to mock the Congress leader. His comments opened the door for political barbs about the satellite internet controversy.

The BJP’s criticism, then, is whether the Congress is applying a consistent standard when talking about the influence of big business groups and government decisions on private companies. But Congress leaders might view his comments as an indictment of the wider influence of powerful interests rather than support for Musk.

What Rahul Gandhi Said To Elon Musk

However, Musk questioned why Starlink’s commercial operations were delayed in India even when Starlink is expanding in India, a company with more than 165 countries and more than 165 countries. He said Starlink has been working on commercialization but still has not yet entered India, and asked why the company is not able to achieve commercial operations to meet India's demand and why Starlink has been waiting for five years in India, he said, and that Starlink has been complying with Indian government laws and requirements and has been in commercial services and requirements on a commercial basis but only with these laws and regulations in place in India in the past 5 years of compliance with Indian government laws and requirements and that Starlink’s compliance was taken in the past five years so far, he said.

At the same time, Musk also questioned whether Reliance Industries' chairman Mukesh Ambani was the “real boss of India”. His comments followed an earlier accusation that powerful business interests are trying to prevent Starlink from entering the market to preserve their position from competition.

Gandhi responded on X: “Welcome to India, Elon. Wait till you discover the other guy.”

Musk replied: “Thank you, Rahul. This is indeed troubling.”

The exchange aroused interest because it featured two global leaders of technology and Indian politics talking over a sensitive issue of competition between business and government regulation. It also offered the BJP the chance to question Gandhi about the impact of his answer.

Musk’s allegations about powerful business interests have not been established as fact. His comments are a reflection of his criticism of the approval process, while the government has given a different explanation for why satellite internet operators are still waiting for final clearances.

Why Starlink’s India Launch Is Delayed

Starlink, operated by Musk’s SpaceX, aims at providing broadband internet by a network of satellites. Satellite-based connectivity could be particularly useful in remote and underserved areas where extending conventional broadband infrastructure can be difficult or expensive.

However, getting an initial licence does not automatically allow a company to start commercial operations. Satellite communication providers must satisfy additional regulatory requirements, including security assessments and procedures associated with the allocation of spectrum.

The Indian government has dismissed accusations that Starlink is being unfairly treated. The Centre said in a statement on October 8 that the legal framework of satellite communication services is fair and non-discriminatory and it has been approved by the government and security assessments were ongoing for the three licensed operators to provide services in the country.

The government insists that each operator must complete the required process before moving on to the next stage. So the delay should not be interpreted as evidence that one company is being deliberately blocked in favour of another.

Reliance Jio And Eutelsat OneWeb Are Also In The Race

Starlink is not the only company looking to expand satellite internet services in India. Reliance Jio and Eutelsat OneWeb, backed by Bharti interests, are also looking into opportunities in the sector.

The market has attracted attention because satellite broadband could complement the existing mobile and fixed-line networks, particularly in areas where the supply of conventional connectivity is limited. Satellite operators need to fulfil national security requirements as well as spectrum and telecommunications rules.

So Musk and Indian authorities are in dispute on the regulatory process. Musk thinks the delay is unjustified as Starlink is well prepared for it, while the government says the same is true of the rest of the sector.

The outcome could impact competition in India's satellite communications market; however, the commercial launch timeline will depend on the completion of the necessary approvals.

Starlink Controversy Becomes A Political Flashpoint

Gandhi vs. Musk illustrates how a regulatory issue can quickly become part of a wider political debate. The BJP is looking for a contradiction in the Congress’s messaging and Musk’s criticism has drawn attention to the challenges facing satellite internet providers who want to come to India.

At the heart of the issue are two separate questions: whether the government’s approval process is being applied consistently and whether the Congress has maintained a consistent position on the influence of large business groups. The political statements exchanged so far do not, by themselves, settle either question.

For consumers, in practice Starlink and other satellite operators will be able to launch commercial services and what options will they offer. For policymakers, the challenge is to balance competition with connectivity and security (and regulatory requirements) to balance competition and connectivity and security and regulation.

As the debate continues, the next major development will be in the regulatory process and not the political remarks. Starlink’s commercial launch is still waiting for clearances until now and the controversy has provided the BJP with another opportunity to attack Rahul Gandhi and the Congress over their foreign business interests.
