Donald Trump Rejects Iran Peace Proposal, Says Offer is ‘Totally Unacceptable’

Donald Trump has emphatically rejected Iran’s latest peace offer, saying its response was “totally unacceptable” against an escalating backdrop of tensions in the Middle East, and diplomatic efforts continue to strive to avoid a bigger regional conflict.

Trump’s remarks followed a review of what Tehran had already said in response to a U.S.-backed offer to end the ongoing confrontation involving Iran, regional militias and foreign forces. And it is considered a major setback for ceasefire negotiations and diplomatic efforts in the region.

Iran’s plan, it is said, encompassed seeking US sanctions to be lifted, naval bans to be lifted along the Strait of Hormuz, and assertions of sovereignty and security interests in the region. Tehran also wanted compensation tied to war damage and rejected key American requests associated with its nuclear mission, reports indicated.

Trump later added on Twitter that he had read the response from Iran’s diplomats, adding that the response had been “TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.” He didn’t clearly say what elements of the proposal were rejected, but he did say that the United States would simply not capitulate on essential security issues.

The dispute has been blamed on Iran’s refusal to fully prohibit uranium enrichment and to remove chunks of its nuclear infrastructure, a prerequisite, Washington says, for any eventual peace agreement. Iran, for its part, has maintained that its nuclear program is linked to national sovereignty and the needs of its civilian population for energy.

And that diplomatic deadlock stoked fears of an immediate surge of military force in the region. Concerns, too, have been escalating about the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for oil shipping across the world and a supplier to much of the world’s crude oil.

Oil prices surged as a result of Donald Trump’s statement, and markets spurned the promise of prolonged instability. Pakistan, for its part, reportedly mediated talks between Washington and Tehran, according to reports.

But as both sides look for and establish positions on fundamental demands, chances for a fast deal look very dim indeed now. Even international observers warn that more volatile relations between Iran and the United States threaten to destabilise the Middle East and have ripple effects throughout global trade, fuel prices and international relations. These developments are expected soon to hit the lips of world leaders.
