Hajj Yusuf, who was famous as Hashem, was a person of Hezbollah on a personal level and head of its headquarters on the southern front. He was a great strategist and operational leader of the organization, having more than 44 years of experience.

The attack was run by the Israeli Navy on a particular target location in Beirut where Hashem was at times believed to be in operation and hence at the target site, Israeli Navy officers said. It is not available publicly and the Israeli government is not really claiming the operation was executed flawlessly, but Israeli officials insist that the strike was a correct way to take away a high-value target.

A Veteran Commander

Yusuf Ismail Hashem was regarded as one of Hezbollah’s most experienced commanders and his leading role in the group’s military operation from day one and the last days to day. Most crucially, his military power was instrumental in recovering and reinforcing Hezbollah’s operational might, particularly in the southern front linking with Israel.

Hashem too, some security researchers and activists said, has had a central involvement in the development of and orchestration of terrorist attacks against Israeli territory and has been an essential factor in the continuing friction between Israel and Hezbollah.

Impact on Regional Dynamics

But his removal was set to transform the global security picture in a very clear and long-term way. Security experts believe the collapse of the chain of command in the region at the given time may disrupt Hezbollah’s hierarchy of power, but then we can expect a chain of retaliation.

The strike is further evidence of the shadow tension between Israel and Hezbollah that has grown since the Israeli-Hezbollah rivalry in recent years has intensified. On the other hand, high-profile attacks on senior commanders are often seen as part of a broader strategy to weaken fighters’ capability.

Rising Tensions

So instability in the region has worsened: the number of fronts has been destroyed and so have several fronts. But that escalation increases to a higher level to a conflict between people facing governments, both sides of which have already been attacked and so it will be harder to get those sides to toe their line even when both sides are able to avoid a clash.

Awaiting Official Responses

There are no official statements from Hezbollah so far about Hashem’s death. But high-profile losses in life are often followed up by a strong response from the group.

Consequently, the situation in the world remains fluid and global monitors would like to keep an eye on it, because there may be reasons why and a potential for the situation may grow out or retaliation be on again soon.

Yusuf Ismail Hashem’s assassination is a turning point in the history of this war with its impacts at this level as a point of conflict and whether the current unrest can still erupt with violence only because of the journalist and community leader killing.
