IRGC Navy Intelligence Chief Behnam Rezaei Killed in Targeted U.S.-Israeli Strike

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has officially confirmed the death of Behnam Rezaei, the Deputy Intelligence Chief of the IRGC Navy (NEDSA), as a result of a targeted military strike. Iranian state media outlets said that the high-ranking official was killed in a strike by U.S. and Israeli forces.

While Tehran admitted to losing one of its most senior maritime intelligence leaders, officials have been notably silent about the location or the nature of the operation.

A High-Value Target in the Shadow War

Behnam Rezaei was a key figure in the IRGC's naval intelligence wing that oversees the surveillance, asymmetrical maritime tactics, and intelligence gathering in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. He was centrally involved in Iran’s strategy of monitoring international naval movements and overseeing proxy operations in the Red Sea.

But regional analysts say the timing of the strike is significant, as the U.S. and Israel intensify their efforts to dismantle the IRGC's command-and-control apparatus following weeks of infrastructure warfare and retaliatory strikes across the Middle East.

Escalation of The U.S.-Israel-Iran Conflict

The confirmation of Rezaei's death follows a series of devastating blows to Iranian assets, including the destruction of the B1 highway bridge and several critical oil processing facilities.

  • The Operation: Although the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has not issued an official statement on the specific attack, Israeli military sources have spoken of “precision intelligence-led actions” against senior IRGC leadership aimed at diminishing their capability to carry out coordinated maritime attacks.
  • Iranian Response: State-run television in Tehran carried tributes to Rezaei as a “martyr of the resistance” and in a statement: “He was a martyr of the resistance.” Hardline elements of the Iranian government are already calling for “crushing retaliation” against U.S. regional bases and Israeli interests.

Impact on Maritime Security

The loss of the Deputy Intelligence Chief is expected to create a gap in the IRGC Navy’s strategic planning for the time being. His death could lead to a time of unpredictable “lone wolf” or proxy-driven maritime provocations as the IRGC revamps the intelligence leadership, experts say.

The Strait of Hormuz is still a major concern for global shipping. With news of Rezaei’s death, maritime security agencies have advised commercial vessels in the region to be on high alert for potential IRGC “fast boat” harassment or drone incursions.
