‘Major Disaster’ On Way? Two Deep-Sea ‘Doomsday Fish’ On Mexico Beach Create Panic Amid Middle East War

This morning on a beach of Baja California Sur, surreal happenings happened as world tension peaked. In the shallow waters at Cabo San Lucas, two rare, ribbon-like oarfish were seen struggling. And as beachgoers and tourists raced to help the two 20-foot-long creatures back into the deep, a sighting has ignited a sprawling wave of “doomsday” warnings across social media.

The Legend of the “Messenger from the Sea God’s Palace”

Oarfish scientifically known as Regalecus glesne usually reside at depths of 3,000 feet in the mesopelagic zone, an area of the ocean where sunlight rarely reaches. In Japanese mythology, these are referred to in all-important Japan, as Ryugu no tsukai or the “Messengers from the Sea God’s Palace”.

Legend has it that oarfish show up to alert us to the upcoming natural phenomena they can, like earthquakes or tsunamis. This was modernized in 2011, when close to 20 oarfish washed ashore in Japan just a few months before the disastrous Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.

Why the Panic Are Speaking in 2026

The timing of this sighting has ramped up anxiety. In an era in which the world is living through Day 10 of the Iran-Israel war, after strikes on Tehran on February 28, many see the "doomsday fish" as a biological portent of a much bigger, looming global catastrophe.

Geopolitical Anxiousness: Commentators on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok are connecting the rare “twin” sighting with the current geopolitical landscape, arguing that nature is adapting according to large kinetic and cyber attacks happening across the Middle East.

Seismic Concern: Deep-sea fish are perceived to be sensitive to the movement of tectonic plates, some theorists say. Since Mexico lies on the "Ring of Fire" (which has the effect of creating a series of active volcanism), the presence of two live oarfish has some local people preparing for a natural occurrence.

Science vs. Superstition

Marine biologists are calling for calm, despite widespread panic. “There is no scientific evidence that oarfish can predict earthquakes or human conflicts,” adds Dr. Elena Rodriguez, a marine researcher from La Paz. “Though their appearances in the shallows are extremely rare and two together are almost nonexistent they are most probably caused by shifts in deep-sea currents, illness or disorientation from shifting water temperatures instead.”.

But for a global public grappling with a higher-than-usual price of oil, internet disruptions and the emergence of a newfound Supreme Leader in Iran, the “messengers from the deep” are a chilling testament of how fragile the world seems in March 2026.
