A violent suicide bombing hit a police station at a peace rally in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Sunday, killing at least 14 people, including five security personnel, local authorities said.
The attack occurred in Kabal town of Swat district, where hundreds of people had gathered to participate in the Swat Peace Rally, an event organized to promote peace and unity in the region.
Suffering heavy casualties and panic on the ground, officials said the suicide bomber detonated explosives close to the police station as the rally was going on. There were also numerous casualties, and more than 100 people were wounded in the powerful blast and sent to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Among those killed were five members of the security forces in charge to safeguard the public gathering. Civilian participants attending the peace march also lost their lives in the attack.
The rally had been organized by the Swat Aman Jirga, a tribal council that has been actively promoting peace and stability in the region. The event was intended to show public support against violence and extremism, making the attack particularly significant.
Following the explosion, security forces immediately cordoned off the area and bomb disposal teams and forensic experts began searching for evidence from the blast site. A search operation has also been launched to search for possible accomplices of the attacker.
No terrorist group or person has so far claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing. The investigation is looking at all possible angles, such as militant organizations that have been operating in the region.
Pakistan has also seen a revival in recent years of militant attacks, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Security forces have always been targeted by extremist groups, and public gatherings and government facilities have also been at risk.
Government officials strongly condemned the attack and expressed condolences to families of those who lost their lives. They said their priority was to bring those responsible to justice and to enhance security in the province.
The latest attack in Pakistan’s northwestern area is the latest of its kind and once again shows that security is still a challenge for Pakistan’s northwest region, where terrorism and peace and stability remain very much in the air for the nation to overcome, and the rest of the country is still struggling.
