Sam Altman’s legal problems have become more pressing and grave as an attorney for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Annie Altman, his sister in Missouri, claims that he sexually abused her as a child. That case was dismissed due to statute of limitations problems, but now is under the child sexual abuse statute of Missouri.
The original lawsuit was filed in January 2025 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. It alleged abuse from 1997 to 2006, starting with Annie at three years old and Sam at twelve. In March 2026, a judge dismissed some of the claims in the case and said that some of the allegations were no longer valid. But the judge gave Annie the right to re‑file under Missouri’s child sexual abuse statute, in which older claims can be reconsidered.
The amended lawsuit alleges Altman sexually molested and raped her during their childhood in Clayton, Missouri. Annie says the abuse went on for nearly a decade. Altman has vehemently denied the charges, calling them false and dangerous. He countersues her for defamation as well, arguing her lawsuit is extortion. Altman also said he had been financially supporting his sister for years, so her lawsuit is unfair.
U.S. District Judge Zachary Bluestone ruled that while standalone sexual assault and battery claims had expired, Annie could still pursue her case under Missouri’s child sexual abuse statute. This ruling brought the suit back to life, and Annie now has to file a revised lawsuit. The case will proceed in federal court in St. Louis.
Altman is now in his prime as OpenAI is growing rapidly and the debate surrounding artificial intelligence is raging all over the planet. The allegations are damaging for his public image and leadership credibility. That the case is still very much in early stages shows the delicate relationship between a private fight for legal battle and a corporate leader in the public eye.
Sam Altman’s legal troubles are now back in court after his sister’s amended lawsuit was accepted under Missouri law. Altman is denying the allegations and countersuing for defamation so that the case will be closely watched both in legal and technology circles at a time of intense public scrutiny and the outcome could not only affect Altman personally but will also shape the perception of OpenAI’s leadership.
