A tragic aviation accident played out in San Diego, California, on Monday when a small aircraft crashed on the runway of Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport and erupted into flames, killing two people in the passenger plane, the San Diego Police Department spokesman said.
The San Diego Police Department said the aircraft was on the runway before crashing into the ground and became fully engulfed in flames. Emergency responders rushed to the scene soon after they heard about the accident, the San Diego Police Department said. Police later confirmed two people died in the crash. No other injuries were reported.

SDFD deployed about 30 personnel to tackle the flames and secure the crash site. Firefighters worked to extinguish the flames that consumed the aircraft, and police officers cordoned off the area to support rescue and investigation efforts.
At the time of the crash, the airport was closed for emergency purposes, officials said.

Federal Investigation Underway
