An abuse case for a special needs child is very troubling and has led to a large body of public awareness including advocates of human rights and child welfare. The boy has been physically and emotionally abused, investigators say part of a process they label as “expelling” what they considered a spiritual entity.
In many ways, the case has drawn attention not just for its savagery, but for the misperceptions it highlights about mental illness and neurophysiological disorders. Behaviors that can be traced back to developmental or cognitive disorders aren’t always accurately measured in regions with poor knowledge of and access to medical care, experts say.

And that in its own right lets superstitious or misapplied cultural practices seep into harmful practices. Child protection agencies said the incident calls for swift legal action against the perpetrators. “There’s no belief system that excuses violence against a child,” one said, referring to the heightened enforcement of child-safety laws and heightened awareness of mental health.
For children with special needs, medical professionals advise, it is empathy, structured support and evidence-based treatment, not punishment or force, that they need. Bad efforts to “heal” can drive deep psychological trauma, increasing symptoms and resulting in death, he said.
The act has also resurrected debate over whether to regulate practices of spiritual healing or alternative treatments. Freedom of belief is a necessary part of life and one that we shouldn’t be willing to pay for with the dignity and safety of all people. Community workers working in impacted communities are demanding increased outreach including education, which can correct misinformation that would help ease fears and misunderstandings around possession and increase awareness of health problems. They also promote fair health care such that families do not have to put up with life-threatening options.
It’s a sad reminder that cultural norms aren’t always compatible with scientific expertise, particularly when a child’s health is at stake an insight we’ve learned, as with this case.
