At least 5 people have died and 40 people have been injured after a Dutch tourist bus crashed and overturned in the Alpine region of eastern Switzerland. The accident occurred on Thursday, September 10, 2026, on the road between Susch and Zernez in Graubünden.
The coach was taking a Dutch tour group and had 48 passengers on board. Swiss authorities said the bus hit a roadside safety barrier before overturning and leaving the road. No other vehicle was involved in the crash.
Five People Killed and 40 Injured
Swiss police later confirmed that five people were killed in the devastating accident. Three of the 40 injured passengers were seriously injured, seven had moderately serious injuries and 30 had only light injuries, according to Reuters.
The identities of those who died were not released. Emergency services launched a huge rescue operation at the mountainous crash site, with ambulances, police, firefighters and helicopters involved in the response.
The remote Alpine terrain presented more challenges for rescuers in their efforts to reach and evacuate the passengers.
Bus Carrying Dutch Tourists
The bus was owned by OAD, a Dutch tour company. The ANVR (General Dutch Association of Travel Companies) confirmed 48 passengers were Dutch nationals. OAD expressed shock and devastation following the accident and extended its thoughts to the victims, survivors and their families.
Early reports said authorities had not yet determined the exact number of deaths or injuries. Swiss authorities gave the casualty numbers as rescue operations progressed.
Crash Happened Near Swiss National Park
The accident occurred between Susch and Zernez, an area in Switzerland’s eastern Alpine region. Zernez is a key gateway to the Swiss National Park, a protected mountainous area in the Engadine region.
Alpine landscapes attract tourists in all seasons, but are also difficult to drive in as they are mountainous.
Investigation Underway
Swiss authorities are investigating the reasons for the crash. They are examining how the coach hit the safety barrier and then overturned.
Swiss President Guy Parmelin expressed his condolences following the tragedy and said authorities would conduct a full investigation into what happened.
The Dutch Foreign Ministry is also following this situation and helping the Dutch nationals involved.
The investigation will establish the precise cause of the crash and authorities are going to help the injured passengers and families of those who died.
