Tornado Warning Ann Arbor: Severe Storm Threatens Washtenaw County

Washtenaw County in Michigan has issued a tornado warning, placing the city of Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and some of the surrounding towns at imminent danger from a rapidly developing, possibly harmful storm system. The tornado warning is from the National Weather Service out of Detroit/Pontiac, Mich.

The alert has frightened area meteorologists, who found significant rotation in a powerful thunderstorm threatening to produce a tornado. The storm was in the vicinity of Chelsea at about 1:30 a.m. EDT and moving east at nearly 55 mph, officials said.

The alert will not be lifted until 2:15 a.m., during which authorities proclaim it “a serious and time-critical situation that demands immediate attention from residents.” Multiple individuals throughout the region said the storm would rapidly hit different regions' populations.

Ann Arbor, Dexter, Ypsilanti, Whitmore Lake, Dixboro, and Salem are all projected to be in the storm’s path. The high speed of this storm could make weather conditions at those locations severe within minutes, meteorologists warn. Most transportation routes such as Interstate 94 (I-94), M-14, and US-23 are also at risk.

Drivers traveling through the early hours with minimal warning about hazardous conditions must also be taken into account. The weather service has said it is dangerous as well as lethal in flying debris. Mobile homes and other structures are especially vulnerable: if a tornado forms and touches down, it’s most likely to damage roofs, windows, vehicles, and trees. Residents have been advised to shelter at once.

Safety recommendations are to move to the lowest level of a sturdy building, away from windows and open space. Waiting minutes could be just as much a matter of life and death, officials say. As it currently stands, that alert is based on radar-indicated rotation and not a confirmed tornado touchdown.

But those systems can rapidly intensify and leave little lead time to prepare. Meteorologists advise people that tornado warnings are given only when formation is very likely, so the warning should be taken seriously by locals. They monitor closely the storm system and will notify you of any changes in circumstances. Residents should keep an eye on official weather channels and emergency alerts, until these threats are all over.
