Thoothukudi residents of Tamil Nadu were shocked when a tornado-like, violent funnel cloud (thought to be a tornado) rocked parts of the district and destroyed homes, infrastructure and businesses. Some photos on social media showed a swirling column of wind and debris moving across the landscape that raised questions about whether a rare tornado had struck the area.
The severe weather event happened in minutes, but left a trail of destruction in its wake. Large numbers of houses were damaged as strong winds ripped roofs, shattered windows, and uprooted trees. Residents reported hearing a roaring sound as the storm raged, and many sought shelter indoors.
A toll plaza on a highway near Thoothukudi was among the buildings hit. Toll booths, signboards and other infrastructure at the site were badly damaged by strong winds as well. Traffic was temporarily suspended as authorities looked at the damage and cleared rubble from the road.
The weather event also left a nearby theme park in the vicinity very affected. Some rides, temporary structures, fencing and other attractions were damaged in the powerful winds, according to initial reports. There were no major casualties reported.
Meteorologists have not yet verified whether it was a tornado. Tornadoes are rare in India, especially in comparison to the United States, but funnel clouds and rotating storms can occur in the case of favourable weather conditions. Weather experts are looking into radar data, satellite images and eyewitness accounts and are still investigating the exact nature of the event.

The incident has attracted great attention because such phenomena are rarely seen in southern India. Those who observed the funnel cloud reported seeing debris, dust, and objects thrown into the air as the storm moved quickly through the affected area. The rotating column from cloud base to the ground that is seen in many videos is often associated with tornado activity.
District officials and disaster management officials rushed to the affected areas. Structural damage was assessed, fallen trees were removed, and normal conditions were restored. Work was also done to fix power lines and communications in the areas affected by the storm.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) will assess the weather conditions and the situation around the incident in detail. This will be a matter of evidence collected from ground surveys and meteorological observations, experts say.
Throughout the cleanup operation, residents are counselled to be vigilant, follow weather advisories and stay clear of any unstable weather conditions. The unusual event serves as a reminder that extreme weather can happen even in regions where it is not expected to take place, highlighting the importance of preparedness and timely weather alerts and warnings.
