As President Trump himself noted, the well-publicised counterterrorism operation was conducted in Africa following what he characterised as a “meticulously planned and very complex mission” informed by intelligence information.

In a statement published on Truth Social, Trump declared the success of both U.S. troops and forces in Nigeria in the operation. “Tonight, under my command, heroic American forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria executed a meticulously planned and very complex mission to take out the world’s most active terrorist from the battlefield,” Trump said.

Abu Bilal al Minuki attempted to go hide in Africa but was chased down by intelligence sources monitoring his activities, Trump has also said. Such an operation would severely impair ISIS’s global operational network and its ability to conduct attacks on Americans and nations over the African continent, he said.

Who was Abu Bilal al Minuki?

Abu Bilal al Minuki Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn Ali al Mainuki was said to have been among the most senior members of ISIS’s international operation. He was widely considered one of the principal drivers of the Sahel region of Africa, a vast and politically chaotic area running through several national borders that teems with extreme insurgencies.

According to narratives from the Counter Extremism Project, al Minuki was one of the senior commanders in the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). Reportedly, he is responsible for the terrorism operations that serve the Lake Chad division of ISIS under the General Directorate of Provinces of ISIS.

US intelligence agencies have named him as a key figure who helped organise funding circuits, recruitment efforts and operational advice for ISIS-associated terror groups operating throughout Africa and other parts of the world.

In June 2023, he was additionally officially classified in the U.S. Department of State as Specially Designated Global Terrorist (or SDGT) because of his alleged connection to global terrorism.

Security analysts are concerned that the killing of al Minuki would be a major advance in the fight ISIS will have in Africa for the fighting it is going to have in the Sahel and Lake Chad, where not just most of the group has operated, but also where it has been a hotbed of extreme violence.

Terror groups claim that they are more likely to swiftly fire their leaders to keep the peace and ensure that operations continue. Trump ended his statement, thanking the Nigerian government for their support of the mission and heralding the joint military effort as a historic victory in the world’s struggle against terrorism.
