The accident occurred overnight at an industrial complex, and the local officials quickly and forcefully responded as they were involved in this situation. Officials said the leak was caused by a highly toxic substance, but hadn’t identified a specific chemical yet.

Within minutes, after workers complained of breathlessness, dizziness and extreme irritation, emergency staff had arrived at the scene. Two people died at the scene after trying to seek medical help. The injured victims were also taken to nearby hospitals, where there were many cases of severe injury.

Officials hadn’t yet vetted the number of people involved, although they are now suspecting up to a dozen might have inhaled the toxic fumes. Finally, police and fire services rushed to barricade the area and evacuate nearby. Emergency shelters have been created for affected families, and environmental crews are sent to gauge contamination in the atmosphere and the nearby environment.

Officials said residents in the targeted area should avoid the area and take safety precautions. “Our initial issue is the public and the immediate containment of the leak,” one spokesperson said in a statement at a news briefing. “We’re also investigating the cause of this incident as well, so we can be sure we don’t re-experience a similar accident.”

The gas leak installation has been shut down indefinitely while investigations continue. Initial estimates suggest it was a mistake in some equipment or a safety defect, but authorities have not ruled out other factors.

And hazards to critical chemicals continue to be an issue with respect not only to industrial and emergency safety standards, but also to how safety is practised generally. Recent incidents in West Virginia illustrate the dangers posed to workers in those events and the importance of oversight by regulators.
