A United Airlines passenger said she was subjected to sexual misconduct from a fellow passenger during a flight and the cabin crew did not respond well when she reported it.
The incident occurred on September 3, 2026 on United Express Flight 3626 in Newark, New Jersey, when it was on a flight from Rochester, New York. The passenger, a 25-year-old pediatric crisis therapist, later reported the incident to United Airlines, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the FBI.
Passenger Alleges Seatmate’s Misconduct.
According to the passenger's account reported by NBC News, the man sitting beside her began masturbating while looking at her during the flight.
She said she felt uncomfortable and moved away from her assigned seat before informing other cabin crew members about the behavior she was seeing.
The crew did allow her to remain away from her seat for a portion of the trip, she said. But she was later asked to return to her original seat because the aircraft was full and there were no other seats available.

The passenger also objected several times to sitting next to him. She said a flight attendant said that she would only have to sit beside him for a few minutes while the plane landed.
The passenger has been quoted as saying that the response made her feel that her concerns were not taken seriously.
They also reported that she was finally seated next to the man for the last part of the flight.
What Happened After Landing?
The passenger also alleged that the man was able to leave the aircraft after it arrived in Newark without any apparent intervention from law enforcement.
According to her account, an airport worker was asking her what they were supposed to do and told her that contacting police was her responsibility.
She then escalated the issue by reporting the incident to United, the FAA and the FBI. These are allegations made by the passenger and do not establish that the airline or crew intentionally ignored her complaint.
United Airlines Investigating
United Airlines confirmed to us that it is looking into the passenger's allegations.
The safety of customers and employees is the top priority of the airline and the airline takes such issues very seriously, a company spokesperson said. United also said it had been in contact with the passenger and apologised for her experience.
The airline’s investigation is expected to investigate how the complaint was handled during the flight and after the aircraft landed.
