The United States has halted immigrant visa appointments worldwide, casting doubt on thousands of applicants, many of whom were going to meet with the immigration applicants around the world e.g. for thousands of potential applicants for immigrant visa at US embassies and consulates in India who were preparing for interviews at US embassies and consulates.
The change comes as the Trump administration is ramping up scrutiny of immigration applications as the Trump administration has intensified scrutiny of immigration applications and tightening the procedures and tighter screening procedures.
The US State Department said it has launched a global training programme for consular officers.
The training is intended to assist visa officers in assessing visa applications into what can be considered a more comprehensive and consistent manner and whether applicants could become dependent on US public benefits. Visa services will be modified as part of the programme.
Scheduled Interviews Cancelled
Applicants who had already scheduled immigrant visa interviews have been told that their appointments have been cancelled or postponed and those who were scheduled have received emails from immigration visa interviewers to say they can no longer see it.
They also say they have been told fresh dates and timings will be communicated later in the process.
But the State Department has not made any firm date about when the normal interview schedule will resume. That leaves applicants unsure about their travel plans, relocation plans and other commitments related to their US immigration process.
For applicants in India, the development could mean more delays for family-based and other immigrant visa cases that depend on consular interviews.
People who have already filled out paperwork, undergone medical examinations, even made travel arrangements may now be left waiting for further instructions.
The new pause is separate from an earlier US policy on immigrant visa processing for 75 countries. On August 21, a federal judge struck down that policy, finding that the State Department had exceeded its authority in postponing visa processing based on nationality.
Part of a Broader Immigration Crackdown
The global pause is at the same time that US immigration rules are tightening under President Donald Trump. The administration has ramped up scrutiny of visa and green-card applicants and added to that with new restrictions on immigration and visa processing.
The State Department has emphasized financial self-sufficiency as a key factor in immigrant visa screening.
In earlier years it also halted visa issuance for nationals of several countries that were worried they may lean on US public benefits.
For now, applicants impacted by canceled interviews will have to wait for further communication from the US embassy or consulate handling their case.
If a restart date is not set for families and people who wish to move to the US, it’s unclear if the uncertainty at this point in time is going to be on hold and therefore families and those who want to go to the United States could be left with no easy path forward.
The development will be closely watched in India as well as other countries with large numbers of US immigration applicants, as Washington continues to change its immigration and visa policies.
