The unusual situation has attracted attention because the assumptions are based only on the baby’s appearance. But scientists have long known that skin colour is a complex genetic trait, which includes many genes inherited from both parents and in some cases genetic variants passed down through earlier generations.

And so a child's appearance can surprise parents and relatives without necessarily indicating infidelity or non-paternity.

Human genetic inheritance is complex and physical characteristics do not always follow simple patterns that can be predicted by looking at the parents. Skin pigmentation, eye colour, hair texture and facial traits can be a combination of genetic variants inherited from both sides of a family.

So a child’s appearance may sometimes lead to questions that are not answered without a definitive answer.

In this case, the reported dispute is still a family matter unless there is strong evidence of a dispute. The husband’s refusal to take a DNA test leaves the question unanswered, and the family’s allegations against the mother should not be treated as fact.
