Police are investigating and several suspects are being questioned now, local officials said early today as detectives try to determine exactly what went wrong, they said.

According to police officials, the girl went missing before her body was found in the basement of the construction site. Residents were scared and anxious about the girl and wanted to see a full investigation as well as to get to the bottom of it.

Police immediately sealed off the area and collected forensic evidence. Crime scene investigators scoured the basement, surrounding structures, and materials used for construction and looked for clues to help reconstruct the sequence of events.

Police officials said several people working on the site, including construction workers and security personnel, were detained for questioning. CCTV footage from nearby places, witnesses accounts, and people on the site before and after the incident are being studied and investigated.

The body will be sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause and time of death. An autopsy report will determine whether the death was accidental, homicidal, or caused under other circumstances, said the officials. “The public need not speculate until the investigation is complete,” they said.

There were serious concerns about the safety and security of under-construction buildings, said the city’s safety and security director, Paul C. Mascale. It was a question for residents how a child could get in and if they had enough security measures in place.

Most also came to the site to monitor construction sites more closely, especially in residential areas where children often play.

Local officials said all angles are being investigated. Senior police officers came to the scene and directed officers to speed up the investigation. They also asked anyone with information to come forward and assist investigators.

There is grief in the whole community following the tragedy. The child was cheerful and innocent, the neighbours said, and they were sorry for the family.

Child rights proponents stressed the need for security in construction zones in such cases and how to prevent such tragedies. Many experts said such protection of fencing, surveillance, and security personnel makes commercial projects vulnerable.

As investigators continue to collect evidence, police have said those responsible, if any wrongdoing is found, would be prosecuted. Details will be made public when forensic reports and witness statements have been reviewed and the case is concluded, they said.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials have suggested that people not spread rumours but only information that has been verified and that rumours should not spread.
