The annual Aadi Festival at Kottayamman Temple in Devakottai, Tamil Nadu, began yesterday with the preparation and offering of pongal, one of the most important rituals to initiate the festivities.
Hundreds of devotees came to the temple from early morning to participate in the sacred ceremony. Women wearing traditional attire prepared pongal in decorated earthen pots and handed over the dish to Goddess Kottayamman as a symbol of gratitude, prosperity, and divine blessing.

The Tamil month of Aadi (which usually falls between mid-July and mid-August) has great religious significance in the state. The worship of various forms of the Divine Mother is very important as temples all over Tamil Nadu organise special prayers, processions and community events during this month.
The pongal-making ceremony is considered to be the first sign of the festival. The milk boiling over the pot is followed by worshipful chanting and thanks, and an abundance of prosperity is believed to be in the future.
