Four pilgrims traveling to Amarnath Yatra lost their lives and eight others sustained serious injuries after a Tempo Traveller collided with a stationary truck on the Bathinda-Bikaner National Highway in Punjab’s Bathinda district early Wednesday morning.
The victims, all residents of Rajasthan's Barmer district, were on their way to the holy Amarnath shrine in Jammu and Kashmir when the tragic accident took place. The injured have been admitted to AIIMS Bathinda where they are being treated.
Tempo Traveller Rammed into Stationary Truck
According to officials, the accident took place at 6:30 am on the Bathinda-Bikaner National Highway.
The pilgrims were in a hired Tempo Traveller with around 12 passengers when the vehicle rammed into a truck parked on the roadside. The impact was so severe that the front portion of the vehicle was completely mangled.
Police teams rushed to the area after receiving information on the crash. Rescue personnel and ambulances took the injured to AIIMS Bathinda, while the bodies of the deceased were sent for post-mortem examination.

Rescue Teams reached Spot Immediately
Sandeep Singh, a volunteer with the Sahara Jan Seva Sanstha, said the organisation received an emergency call about the accident and immediately dispatched a rescue team.
When we arrived, we found that a Tempo Traveller had collided with a stationary trailer. There were around 11-12 passengers inside. Four people died at the scene and seven-eight people were injured, he said.
He said three bodies were moved to the Civil Hospital mortuary, while one was taken to AIIMS Bathinda. The injured are being treated at AIIMS.
The victims were from Rajasthan’s Barmer District.
Dr. Lavdeep Singh, emergency medical officer at the Civil Hospital, said three of the victims were brought to the hospital shortly after the accident.
He confirmed that documents such as Aadhaar cards indicated that all the victims belonged to Barmer district in Rajasthan.
Police Confirm Details
DSP Harvinder Singh Sara said the group consisted of family members and family friends travelling together for the annual Amarnath pilgrimage.
"We had 10 to 12 people from Barmer, Rajasthan travelling in a hired Tempo Traveller to the Amarnath Yatra. The vehicle hit a truck parked on the roadside from behind. Four people died on the spot and eight others were taken to hospital," he said.
The deceased included members of different families, including a father and daughter, the officer said. The dead were a man aged around 50 and at least a young woman in her mid-20s.
Investigation Underway
Police began to investigate the cause of the crash. Poor visibility, driver fatigue and other factors may have been involved, he said.
"We are waiting for more details on the deceased and injured to be known."
