Ambaji, Gujarat: A road accident in Gujarat’s Ambaji claimed the life of a man after a van lost control and crashed into a CNG filling station, fatally hitting a man who was sitting nearby. The road safety and the need for vehicle control in areas with public activity, once again, has been raised.

As per initial information, the van suddenly veered off its path and entered the CNG station. Before anyone could react, the vehicle struck a man sitting close to the station. The impact was fatal and the victim died at the scene or shortly after.

Witnesses said the incident happened in seconds and customers and the station’s staff were in a panic. But people at the station rushed to help the injured man and informed the police and emergency medical services shortly after the incident. But the victim was not saved.

The exact cause of the accident is still unknown. The investigators are trying to determine whether the driver lost control due to mechanical failure, brake failure, excessive speeding, or a medical problem. The van driver has been questioned because of this, the report said.

Police arrived at the accident site soon after receiving the news about the crash. They secured the area, made a preliminary inspection, and initiated legal proceedings. The body was sent for post-mortem examination and was handed over to family members.

The CNG station's CCTV footage will also be reviewed by officials to reconstruct the sequence of events. Evidence of how the van entered the station and whether any external factors may have caused the crash will be made clear in the footage.

The accident caused panic among the people at the fuel station. Since CNG stations are in contact with compressed natural gas, any collision between cars can potentially be deadly. The gas leak, fire, or explosion did not happen after all. The infrastructure of the station was not destroyed and it was safe to not go in for a bigger disaster.

The road safety experts say such incidents require regular vehicle maintenance and strict adherence to speed limits, and better protective barriers around public facilities such as fuel stations, where people’s vehicles and public facilities are present. Addressing safety bollards with reinforced safety bollards in front of seating areas and pedestrian areas can help to minimize accidents involving out-of-control vehicles, road safety experts say.

Residents of the city expressed sorrow over the incident and expressed condolences for the victim's family. Many also advised authorities to review safety measures around fuel stations and other public spaces that pedestrians regularly gather.

Police have also registered a case and are on the job. A further investigation will be made once the van has been examined for mechanical inspection, witness statements have been made, and forensic study has been conducted. Drivers have been encouraged to take care while driving and ensure that their vehicles are still running to prevent any other accidents like this.

The identity of the deceased was not known at the time of this report. More should be found as the investigation goes forward.
