Farmer Builds Homemade Stair Lift for Wife with Knee Pain; Andhra Pradesh Man's Innovation Wins Hearts

Love is often measured through grand gestures, but sometimes the most meaningful expression of affection is solving everyday struggles. Andhra Pradesh’s own story about an elderly farmer building a stair lift for his wife, in an effort to help her move between floors in spite of severe knee pain, has made national news.

The bright and inspiring innovation is Satti Shivanarayana Reddy, a farmer and mechanic from Arthamuru village in East Godavari district, who proved that determination, practical knowledge, and compassion can accomplish remarkable things—even without engineering education.

A Wife’s Pain Became His Mission

Shivanarayana Reddy's wife, Satyaveni (58), had been suffering from chronic knee pain for many years. The home has 21 steps to the first floor, where the family lives, because of traditional Vastu beliefs. Climbing those stairs every day had become a painful challenge for her.

Reddy was deeply affected by watching his wife struggle daily. One day, Satyaveni asked him the simplest and most impactful question: “You are a mechanic. Why can’t you build something like a lift for our house?”

That one question motivated him to bring about a practical solution that would ease her suffering.

Innovation Without an Engineering Degree

Shivanarayana Reddy studied only up to the fifth level; he spent his whole life repairing agricultural equipment and working with mechanical equipment. His experience working with machines is what made him an expert in handling machines, even though no technical training was given.

He has five acres of farmland, four tractors, and operates a rice mill. His deep knowledge of machinery was the basis of his amazing invention.

After months of studying different mechanisms and designing a suitable system, he built a functional home stair lift in just 20 days.

All the work was around ₹70,000, so it is a very cheap alternative compared to traditional residential elevators.

The Features of the Homemade Stair Lift

The device is designed with convenience and safety at the forefront of consideration.

Some of the notable features of this are:

  • Load capacity: Can carry up to 300 kgs.
  • Motor: 1.5 HP electric motor.
  • Energy Efficient: The electric motor consumes relatively low power.
  • Automatic Safety System: An automatic stop feature that allows for safety.
  • Power Backup: 1400 VA inverter in place, so even in power cuts.

With this innovation, Satyaveni can now comfortably move between floors without experiencing the pain of climbing stairs. The stair lift is also used by other members of the family, like Shivanarayana Reddy himself.

A Rural Innovation Inspiring Many

The story has gained national admiration, and a lot of people have reached out to Reddy about his design and construction work. Innovation is not limited to laboratories or engineering colleges.

But practical experience combined with a true desire to solve real-life problems can bring about practical technological solutions.

A Message for Young People

Shivanarayana Reddy has told young people to think creatively rather than waste their time.

Determination, practical knowledge, and confidence are the key elements of innovation, according to him. Anyone willing to recognize problems and work on solutions can create something good for society, he says.

Reddy is also involved in community service besides his mechanical work. He has been involved in building several temples and is well known for putting up temple flagpoles.

Love Expressed Through Action

Shivanarayana Reddy's homemade stair lift is more than a mechanical invention; it is a symbol of love, care, and commitment. He chose not to offer a big romantic gesture; he let his wife suffer every day; and that is the real love when you respond with thoughtfulness.

His story reminds us that innovation starts with empathy. A person without a high level of education or expensive technology can change lives, and that’s with a caring mind and practical skills. In an era driven by modern technologies, this remarkable farmer has shown that the best inventions have their origins in the simple need to help someone we love.
