The accident occurred at 8 p.m. near a bank on KC Goyal Marg. Constable Jitender Kumar, who is on duty at the Ashok Vihar Police Station, was returning to the station on a government motorcycle, after finishing work at Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital's mortuary.

The First Information Report (FIR) says that the silver sedan allegedly driven by the student approached from behind and suddenly swerved to the left, colliding with the constable’s motorcycle.

The impact apparently took the constable and his motorcycle off the road, police said. The car didn’t stop after the accident, police said. The car passed over both of the constable’s legs before it stopped when the damaged motorcycle fell under the car. It made people feel panic and they rushed to help the injured policeman and pulled him out from underneath the car.

Local police personnel were on the scene right away and Constable Jitender Kumar was taken to a hospital at a nearby location for treatment. His condition is serious and he is still receiving treatment. The damaged government motorcycle and the sedan involved in the collision were recovered from the scene. The suspect was in the vicinity of the vehicle when police came and was immediately taken into custody for questioning.

As a result, officers discovered that the 19-year-old did not hold a valid driving licence. In light of the constable’s statement and evidence collected from the scene, police filed an FIR under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (rash driving on a public way), Section 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and Section 3/181 of the Motor Vehicles Act for driving without a licence.

Police said the investigation is ongoing to determine all the circumstances that led to the accident. Forensic evidence and witness accounts and other evidence collected in the course of the investigation were also examined and further criminal charges could be laid. Again, road safety, reckless driving and the dangers of unlicensed drivers on busy city roads are on the rise in this case, said police.
