Assam government has presented ambitious Budget 2026-27 which is a road map for employment creation, infrastructure development and balanced regional development.
The budget will create 2 lakh jobs, increase road connection to the district and establish a second capital region which is going to help strengthen governance and economic development in the state.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the budget as one for building a stronger and more self-reliant Assam while also making sure development reaches every district.
One of the most important announcements is that government will create 2 lakh jobs over the next few years. The employment plan is aimed at recruitment in government departments and private sector investment in the future to create sustainable jobs for youth.
The government will also expand skills training programmes to heighten employment opportunities and meet industry requirements to ensure that jobs are created.
Infrastructure development is another major pillar of the budget. Many new road projects have been proposed to improve connectivity between rural and urban areas.
Better transportation networks are expected to reduce travel time, boost trade and improve access to education, healthcare and business opportunities.
A crucial part of the budget is the proposal to develop a second capital region. This is meant to decentralise administration, to relieve pressure on the existing capital and to expand development in another part of the state.
Government offices, public infrastructure and modern urban facilities are expected to be built in the new region with new growth opportunities for investment and jobs.
The budget also focuses on the development of the industrial ecosystem in Assam.
Investment plans for manufacturing, tourism, agriculture and new industries have been proposed. Better infrastructure, supportive policies and skills development projects in place are expected to make the state attractive to business.
Agriculture is being kept in mind and plans for better irrigation, modern farming methods and market access are being developed.
Higher farming productivity will benefit the rural economy of the state, the government says.
Education and healthcare are also top priorities of the budget.
Funding for education and healthcare infrastructure in schools, higher education institutions and healthcare infrastructure are among the recommendations for improving public services and quality of life for residents.
Greater civic infrastructure, housing, sanitation and public transport in cities to support rapid urbanisation and sustainable growth are some measures that are being taken.
For financial experts, the success of the budget will be largely dependent on timely execution and effective use of funds. Big projects, large-scale infrastructure and employment programmes too often need to be executed consistently to achieve the intended benefit.
The Assam Budget 2026-27 is representative of the government’s long-term plan to create jobs and improve the infrastructure and regional development of the state.
If well implemented, the proposed efforts will be beneficial to Assam’s economy, improve connectivity and increase opportunities for millions of people in Assam.
