A tragic accident took the life of a five-year-old boy and injured another child after a compound wall collapsed in Bandikodigehalli near Bagalur in Bengaluru Rural district. It happened in the evening when a group of children were playing near the gate of a residential house, when the compound wall broke down on Wednesday evening.
The deceased child is Afeen, a five-year-old boy. Samanvi, another child who had been injured in the accident, was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Her condition is currently being monitored by doctors, said officials.
According to initial information, the accident occurred at 6:30 PM when three children were playing near the gate attached to a compound wall in Bandikodigehalli. Residents of the area said the wall had already begun to show cracks and was said to have been in a weakened condition for some time.
Witnesses said the children were playing close to the entrance when the damaged wall suddenly collapsed. Within seconds, a big part of the structure collapsed, trapping the children underneath the debris.
Residents rushed to the scene immediately after hearing a loud crashing sound and cries for help. They started rescue efforts and removed the rubble in an attempt to save the children. Emergency services were alerted, and the injured children were transported to a hospital for medical attention.
Unfortunately, Afeen died from the accident. Doctors declared him dead even after trying to save his life. The news of the child’s death has left family members, neighbours, and residents devastated.
Samanvi was also caught under the collapsed wall and is now in the hospital. Medical officials say she suffered non-fatal injuries and is being monitored.
Residents of the area expressed shock and anger after the incident. The wall had cracks and structural weakness before the collapse, according to several people who saw it. Residents of ageing and poorly maintained houses in residential areas have expressed worries that the area where children play and gather could be a target for a disaster.
The tragedy has once again emphasised the dangers of neglected infrastructure and the need for regular structural inspections. Damaged walls, weakened foundations, and ageing construction materials can be dangerous during periods of rain and changing weather conditions, experts say.
They have called on property owners to do maintenance and repair work in time so the same thing doesn’t happen. Civic officials will determine if negligence or failure to fix known structural defects led to the collapse.
Police officers from Bagalur Police Station visited the scene and began an investigation of the incident. Witnesses and residents are being questioned, and the condition of the structure before the accident is being investigated.
The dead child’s body was handed over to the family after the necessary legal processes. The collapse is still being investigated to determine the cause and whether any legal action should be taken.
The tragic death of young Afeen has cast a shadow over the community and serves as a painful reminder of the need for vigilance when it comes to building safety. Residents hope the incident will prompt authorities and property owners to take immediate measures to identify and repair unsafe structures before more lives are put at risk.
