Bay of Bengal Depression: IMD Issues Severe Cold Wave Alert for Karnataka Over Next 24 Hours

As a major weather system develops in the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a twin alert for the state of Karnataka. The coastal areas of bordering states are gearing up for rain. But the Karnataka hinterland is liable to see a significant dip in temperatures. The IMD stated that it has issued a report suggesting cold wave conditions and dense fog will affect regions across much of the state over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Deep Depression in the Bay of Bengal

A deep depression, which is hanging over the Southwest Bay of Bengal at present now, is heading in a west-northwestern direction, according to the regional meteorological center. It is projected to weaken slightly before crossing the North Sri Lanka coast — between Trincomalee and Jaffna by Saturday afternoon. Because of this system, sea conditions in the Southwest Bay of Bengal and surrounding Indian Ocean regions are expected to stay “very rough” until January 10. Although a system moving away from the Indian mainland has been established, its atmospheric impact is also drastically shifting the weather patterns throughout South India.

Karnataka Cold Wave Pounds The State of Karnataka

If the depression brings moisture to the coast, it is bringing dry, cold air into the interior of Karnataka. The IMD has reported that:

  • Tremendous Fall in the Temperatures: Minimum temperatures in some areas of the North and South Interior of Karnataka could drop 3 to 6 degrees Celsius below the normal.
  • Vijayapura Weather: Over the last 24 hours Vijayapura has already recorded official cold wave conditions, with people waking up each morning to biting chills.
  • Fog Warning: Early-morning travelers should be wary because dense fog is expected to diminish highway visibility.

Rain and Dry Forecast

Although it’s a cold wave, the IMD estimates that most of the state will have dry weather. But with the help of the outer bands of depression, light scattered rainfall is possible in some southern districts.

Predict of Light Rain:

The area with the light rain is found in Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Tumakuru, Chikkaballapura, Kolar, Ramanagara, Mandya, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, and Kodagu. It is expected that the districts such as Ballari, Chikkamagaluru, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Hassan, Shivamogga, and Vijayanagara will remain dry with clear skies while cold nights prevail.

Safety and Health Advisory

Since temperatures have reached record lows for the season, health experts said that young children and the elderly should take precautions against respiratory problems. IMD monitoring movement of depression will be continued for Comorin area.
