The accusation: A Biscuit and a Proposal

The violence stemmed from a meeting between the salon owner Mohan Kumar and a female beautician who worked for him. She said Mohan Kumar offered her a biscuit and made a romantic proposal.

The beautician had rejected the advances immediately. This led to a rift between the employer and the employee, and Mohan Kumar terminated her job. The beautician's husband was upset and felt the dismissal was harassment and unjust retaliation for the rejected proposal.

The Attack: CCTV captures the Violence

Fuming over his wife’s dismissal, the beautician’s husband arrived at the salon with a group of four to five associates. The group forcibly entered the premises and launched a brutal physical assault on Mohan Kumar.

Mohan’s wife Sreeja intervened and also tried to stop the violence, but the attackers manhandled her too, grabbing her by the neck and pushing her away. The gang didn’t just assault; they vandalized the salon and broke equipment and furniture. The entire incident lasted for several minutes and was recorded on several of the salon’s internal CCTV cameras and provided evidence of the culprits.

Police Action

After the attack, Mohan Kumar approached the Avalahalli Police Station to lodge a complaint against the beautician, her husband and the other unknown men involved in the raid.

The Avalahalli police have filed a case of physical assault, criminal intimidation and trespassing. The beautician’s side says the owner’s behavior was inappropriate, but the police are looking at the violent nature of the retaliation. The husband and others who have gone into hiding since the incident are being sought in a search operation.

Safety and Workplace Conduct Note

  • Legal Recourse: Harassment employees should report it to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) or local police rather than resorting to physical retaliation themselves.
  • The evidence: CCTV footage and digital communications are often the primary evidence for harassment allegations and assault charges in such cases.

The case has brought up the volatile nature of workplace disputes in small businesses. Do you think the lack of formal HR grievance cells in local shops is what drives people to take the law into their own hands?
