Bengaluru: Panic spread through Bengaluru's Cottonpet area after a residential building tilted dangerously, and residents in the vicinity fled to a safe place at a time when they feared it could collapse. No casualties or injuries were reported so far as the occupants managed to get out of the building in time.
The incident created tension in the densely populated neighborhood, and residents gathered outside the affected building as authorities rushed to the scene to assess the situation. Videos and photographs of the visibly tilted structure quickly circulated on social media and raised concerns about the safety of aging buildings in the city.
According to preliminary descriptions, residents noticed that the walls were cracked and leaning in the building, and immediately notified neighbors and local officials. As it appeared to be deteriorating, those in the building were forced to vacate the building immediately in order not to have a tragedy occur, and the residents fled quickly.
Police personnel, civic officials, and emergency response teams arrived shortly after the information. The area around the building was cordoned off as a precautionary measure to prevent pedestrians and vehicles from passing near the unstable structure.
The exact reason behind the incident remains to be determined. The cause has not yet been definitively determined, but experts are expected to check the building to see if weak foundations, nearby excavation work, poor construction quality, water seepage, or the age of the structure caused the tilt.
People living in neighboring buildings should be cautious until the structural assessment is done, they added. If necessary, adjacent buildings may be checked to ensure they are not in danger.
Such a disaster highlights the need for periodic structural reviews for older buildings in Bengaluru, particularly those in densely populated areas where many buildings have been standing for decades.
People in the area expressed relief that the occupants escaped safely, but also expressed concern that, if we have more such incidents in the future, there are more and more buildings where these are coming from. There have been calls for inspections of old buildings that would be more thorough and a quicker response to structures that are dangerous to the public’s safety.
The authorities want people not to gather near the affected building because it is still structurally weak. Engineers will give their report after the inspection and decide if the building can be repaired or whether it needs to be demolished.
We are keeping very much on the money, and the police have assured people that they have taken all measures to prevent any untoward incident. More information will be available after the technical inspection is completed.
