A major road accident involving a lorry, tractor and Bolero vehicle occurred on National Highway 648 near Lakshmipura Gate in Devanahalli taluk of Bengaluru Rural district, causing panic among drivers and raising road safety issues on highways. All those involved escaped with injuries, and no casualties in the accident were reported.
The incident took place near Lakshmipura Gate, which falls under the jurisdiction of Vishwanathapura Police Station. The lorry travelling from Doddaballapur to Devanahalli lost control of the vehicle along the highway, investigators have said.
Witnesses said that the lorry was moving at a high speed when the driver lost control. The truck first rammed into a tractor moving in the same direction. The impact was strong enough to damage the tractor and send shock waves through the surrounding traffic.
But the accident did not end there. After the tractor collided with the truck, the lorry veered off the road and hit the opposite side and then moved to the other side. In a frightening sequence of events, the out-of-control vehicle then collided with a Bolero coming from the opposite direction. The second collision further intensified the accident, and both vehicles were severely damaged.
The footage was recorded on a highway CCTV camera at the accident site. The video shows the lorry suddenly swerving before hitting the tractor and crossing into the opposite lane, it said.
Despite the force of the collisions, the drivers of the lorry, tractor and Bolero survived. All three were injured but escaped from what could have been a potentially fatal accident, said the authorities. Emergency workers and residents rushed to the scene immediately after the crash and helped to save the injured individuals.
Several other motorists on the highway at the time narrowly escaped being hit. Witnesses described the incident as a “just-miss tragedy” and said a lot worse would have happened if there had been more traffic or more cars in the vicinity.
The accident temporarily put traffic on hold when police and rescue teams were on the scene to clear away the damaged vehicles and restore normal traffic flow. Cars clogged the road with long lines of vehicles still waiting for the wreckage to be removed.
Police officials from Vishwanathapura Police Station visited the spot and started an investigation into the incident. Speed and fatigue of the driver, mechanical failure or negligence are being investigated as possible causes of the loss of control. CCTV footage is to be reviewed as well.
Because of their size and momentum, road safety experts say, accidents involving heavy vehicles often lead to severe consequences. They stress the need to keep driving at a safe speed, perform regular checks of vehicles and exercise caution while driving on highways.
The incident is another reminder of the dangers of driving on a highway and the need to maintain strict traffic rules. Although the death toll was low and authorities and residents from the surrounding area were relieved, the crash underscores the need to be safe on busy roads.
Further investigation is ongoing, and police will present a report after reviewing all the available evidence (CCTV footage and witness accounts).
