Bengaluru’s First Double-Decker Flyover Fully Opens, Easing Traffic Between Ragigudda and Silk Board

For all its big upgrades of urban infrastructure, Bengaluru has also welcomed its first-of-its-kind public-use double-decker flyover that has been completed, boosting connectivity between Ragigudda and Central Silk Board to huge heights.

Commuting across the expressway is now seamless after the completion of the second carriageway, providing an uninterrupted, non-stop ride either way. The newly launched 5.25-km-long double-decker flyover by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited was constructed at a cost of approximately ₹449 crore today.

The project is one piece of the city’s wider efforts to decongest one of its busiest traffic corridors on Hosur Road. In July 2024, one of the two sides of the flyover (to go from Ragigudda to Silk Board) was opened to the public. However, the return stretch had remained closed due to ongoing construction work that was ongoing, especially near HSR Layout.

Since all other work has been accomplished, the second side has been opened, and the flyover is fully in operation. The route is now open to the public, and trial runs by authorities have already happened since the previous day. What is equally remarkable about the double-decker structure is that on the top deck, a metro line traverses, alongside a road flyover below; it is the first of its kind in urban Bengaluru.

The flyover connects Ragigudda to Central Silk Board, a major traffic hub and particularly congested during peak hours. On this stretch, travellers can expect a travel time decrease of up to 30% thanks to the absence of signalling. Officials estimate it now takes 4-5 minutes as compared to 15-20 minutes during peak hours.

Thousands of daily commuters should benefit, especially with IT corridors and residential areas, including HSR Layout as a priority. This project represents a turning point in Bengaluru’s infrastructure development: both sides are now open. It will be a real stop to many traffic jams and will help relieve citywide gridlock. A double-decker flyover will alleviate traffic congestion across the whole city by vastly reducing waiting time.
