Bengaluru Shivers as Temperatures Dip; Doctors Issue Health Advisory for Children and Elderly

Bengaluru residents woke up on Saturday to a cool and crisp morning, with the minimum temperature hovering around 14°C and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stating the "dry weather" spell that has characterized the state’s climate for several days is likely to last through the weekend.

State-Wide Dry Weather Forecast

The condition of the atmosphere is extremely consistent and there are no indications of moisture or rainfall, the IMD said. Coastal Karnataka: Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and other districts are receiving clear skies and dry air.

North Interior Karnataka

The chill is worst still, it appears, when you look at the north belt, city of Belagavi, Bidar, Vijayapura, and Dharwad which has seen temperatures far below what is normal. South Interior Karnataka: In addition to Bengaluru, Mysuru, Shivamogga, and Chikkamagaluru are experiencing a withering dry breeze and low humidity.

DOCTOR'S ADVICE: Health Precautions

Doctors in the city say seasonal flu and respiratory problems are up because of the abrupt shift in temperature between cold nights and sunny afternoons. “We are recommending that citizens, especially children and the elderly, prioritize thermal protection,” local general physician Dr. K. Murthy tells CNN.

“The minimum cool to 14°C may not be harsh by international standards, but the dry wind can quickly lead to rapid body heat loss and cause dehydration.” The medical advice is made up of:

  • Clothing of all types: Use jackets, mufflers and socks, particularly in the morning or after the sun sets.
  • Keep hydrated: Even in the cold stay well hydrated to counter the dry air.
  • Good Fasting: Eat warm, freshly cooked, nutrient-dense meals when you’ve been trained in a diet that boosts immunity.
  • Mothers: Skin creams can keep your skin from splintering from the “Shushka” dry weather.

Temperature Outlook

Maximum temperature in Bengaluru is anticipated at 27 °C during midafternoon hours resulting in a marked 13-degree day and night transition. This “warm day, cold night” pattern is an archetype of the transition in February in Karnataka. Even though the sun shines, air of "dryness" is expected to last up another 48 to 72 hours. As the city winds through this long cold spell, the public should remain vigilant about their health and ensure the most vulnerable in society those sleeping in poorly insulated homes — have enough warm bedding.
