A major fire broke out Monday morning at a cotton factory and cloth godown in the Patrapada area of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, in which Odisha Fire and Emergency Services quickly responded.
Firefighters from Jatani and Tamando fire stations were on the way to the site and were able to contain the fire after firefighting efforts over the course of 24 hours.
The fire was reported at 8:40 a.m., when emergency services received information of flames burning a cotton godown, the officials said. Cotton and textile materials are so flammable that the fire spread quickly causing smoke and creating concern for nearby residents and workers.
Fire Officer Narayana Dash said no casualties or injuries were reported and firefighting teams were deployed as soon as the emergency call was received.
Looking at the media, Dash said: “The fire has been put under control and there are no casualties. At 8:40 AM, we received a message of a fire in a cotton godown. The fire was big. We have called fire teams from Jatani and Tamando fire stations."
Firefighters worked for several hours to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings and warehouses. They did so in concert and kept the situation under control despite the difficult circumstances around combustible textile materials.
The cause of the fire has yet to be confirmed by authorities. There is no firm cause of it but the state government is still investigating. A full investigation will be performed if the site is declared safe, but so far preliminary reports show that the fire did damage to cotton and cloth materials stored in the cotton and cloth materials, and the overall impact is still not the total financial loss but the total amount of the financial loss is not yet known.

Local residents could see thick black smoke coming from the industrial site and videos and photographs of the incident quickly spread on social media.
Police also arrived at the scene to control traffic and public safety while firefighting was going on.
Cotton and textile storage facilities are particularly hazardous for industrial fires because cotton burns quickly and burns intensely. That’s why fire experts say good storage practices, electrical safety inspections, and fire suppression mechanisms are key to warehouses handling combustible materials.
The situation once again demonstrates the necessity of emergency response and preparedness on industrial grounds. Fire services personnel’s timely arrival saved an even bigger tragedy for an entire business where the company would have been located.
As cooling works continue, officials will determine if the building is structurally safe before allowing entry into the building. The investigation into the cause of the fire will determine if electrical problems and machinery failure were part of the cause of the fire or not.
Fortunately, Odisha Fire and Emergency Services’ quick response ensured that the fire was extinguished without any loss of life, which was appreciated by workers, business owners, and residents in the Patrapada area.
