Bihar government has announced a major crackdown on fraudulent appointments in education and will fire more than 3,000 teachers who have fraudulently obtained jobs in the education system with fake degrees or forged educational certificates.
Bihar Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari said the state will be transparent in the recruitment process and integrity in the state.
According to the minister, verification of teachers’ educational documents has revealed that thousands of appointments were obtained using fabricated academic credentials.
The government has taken strong action against the culprits, including suspension and possible legal action against them, he said.
Mithilesh Tiwari said that the verification process is part of the Bihar government’s larger drive to improve the quality of education and eliminate discrepancies in public recruitment.
To him, teaching is a trust and responsibility profession and people who take up the positions through dishonest means destroy education and good candidates.
The verification drive has been ongoing for months and has examined certificates issued by universities, colleges and educational boards in various states, officials said.
In most cases, the institutions confirmed that the degrees submitted were either fake, altered, or never issued.
The Education Department will issue formal dismissal orders once final verification and the necessary administrative procedures are completed.
There are also criminal cases against those who commit document forgery, as issuing fake certificates for government employment is a punishable offence under Indian law.
The government has received mixed responses to its decision.
Education experts and civil society groups have supported the move, but teacher groups have called on the department to give every impacted person time to make their case at the time to be heard so that all those who have been affected have time to show their case to the minister before any formal action is taken.
And genuine candidates shouldn't be left behind for clerical mistakes or mistaken identity during document verification, they said.
It’s not the first time Bihar has faced controversies regarding teacher recruitment.
There have been several investigations into forged certificates, irregular appointments and recruitment scams and the state has taken various steps to check whether or not anybody is eligible to work in government schools.
The new move will further build public confidence in Bihar's education system, not only as long as it can, but also as an incentive to create a merit-based education system.
But it is also important for us to remove the unqualified teachers from our classrooms to ensure that students are getting educated from genuine professionals.
Bihar's government has maintained its mission is not only to punish offenders but to restore credibility to the state's education system.
As verification begins to come to a close, thousands of appointments have surely to be further investigated and the government is going to keep going to fight against fraudulent recruitment.
And this is one of Bihar’s biggest actions against fake educational qualifications in recent years it is also evidence that the state is becoming more open and accountable about transparency, accountability, and education reform.
