Sharma's campaign takes place at a time when political parties in Assam are moving forward to consolidate their support among voters. The Nagaon seat is of great political importance and not only in the constituency but also in the state as it is also a political issue that has a national aspect and will influence the polls.

Debasish Sharma is the BJP candidate it has decided to field in order to show its political leadership as well as engage the voters of the constituency. Party workers and supporters will be very busy once they hear the news and they will start preparing for an aggressive campaign to be launched on local issues, development and performance of the government.

Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency is a politically diverse part of Assam election territory. Elections in the area have long involved local concerns, interests of the society, development, political trends in the state and national political system. As campaigning begins these factors will come into play and therefore the electoral narrative will be shaped.

The by-poll will also allow the BJP to shore up its base in Assam. The party has grown in political sphere in the northeastern state for several years and maintaining or winning over key parliamentary groups is very important. Sharma’s selection is therefore very important for the party to connect its organisational base and reach out to the people.

The opposition will respond quite vocally to BJP’s candidate announcement too. And as the by-election is likely to be a direct political battle, rival parties could raise local issues, unemployment, infrastructure, public services, agriculture and other issues affecting residents of Nagaon. The campaign will also be focused on parties' visions for the constituency and Assam in the end.

Candidate selection is often an important part of a by-election campaign because parties have only so little time to build up their narrative and create voter momentum and build up their story with voters. Sharma will now be expected to talk to local party leaders, workers and voters and present the BJP's priorities for the constituency.

The campaign will also be addressed by senior leaders as the election inches closer. Political parties might organise rallies, public meetings and outreach programmes for maximum voter participation and to build up their support base.

For voters in Nagaon, the by-poll will give a chance to evaluate the candidates and the competing political platforms. Local development, employment opportunities, connectivity, education, healthcare and other constituency-specific issues will be topics that will be the focus of the conversation in the campaign.

The BJP's announcement of Debasish Sharma has thus formally opened a new phase of the Nagaon by-election contest. The campaign in question, candidate outreach and voter preferences will be closely watched and the outcome of the election will be decided by the parties as they will have to prove their political strength in Assam to win it.

As the elections and campaign are waged, details of the competing candidates, campaign strategies and the political issues will be emerging. For now, BJP's nomination of Debasish Sharma establishes its electoral choice and begins what could be a very heated fight for the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat.
