On Friday, Jharkhand’s Jamtara district was rocked with a big political protest as the BJP, led by Jharkhand BJP leader Babulal Marandi, held a protest in reaction to the deaths of a woman and a newborn baby at Jamtara Sadar Hospital.
The controversy began when a pregnant woman and her newborn son allegedly died during treatment at the government-run hospital. The bereaved family and local residents accused hospital officials of medical negligence and delayed treatment, leading to protests outside the hospital. The incident triggered widespread outrage, with calls for accountability and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
In a political dimension, BJP leaders alleged that women visiting Jamtara Sadar Hospital to seek treatment were being systematically referred to private nursing homes instead of getting proper care at the government facility. The party said the public health system in the district had deteriorated despite the Health Minister representing the area.
Babulal Marandi and BJP workers marched to Jamtara Collectorate (Samaharanalay) to raise slogans against the Jharkhand government.
The protesters called for immediate action against those responsible for the alleged medical lapses, withdrawal of FIRs registered against BJP workers following the earlier demonstrations, and the resignation of Health Minister Irfan Ansari.
Instead of taking action against officials responsible for the hospital tragedy, the district administration was filing charges against party workers protesting the deaths, according to the BJP. The party said the administration was trying to suppress public outrage and not address the health conditions that led to the tragedy.
Hospital officials, however, deny negligence and say doctors were able to save the mother and child. The woman had serious medical problems during childbirth and the exact cause of death was to be determined by an investigation.
After the incident, district authorities ordered an investigation into the deaths to identify whether there were any lapses in treatment or hospital procedures. Police were deployed to maintain law and order after protests intensified outside the hospital and later during the BJP-led demonstration.

The incident has once again brought up concerns of maternal healthcare, emergency medical services, and the condition of government hospitals in rural Jharkhand.
Healthcare experts have long pointed to shortages of specialists, inadequate infrastructure, and delayed referrals as major challenges facing patient care in some districts.
As the investigation continues, the issue has evolved from a tragic healthcare incident into a major political flashpoint in Jharkhand.
Although the victim’s family wants justice for their loss, the BJP promised to continue its protests until those responsible are held accountable and the demands regarding the FIRs and the Health Minister's resignation are met.
The outcome of an official inquiry is expected to determine if medical negligence could be a factor in the deaths and what action is likely to be taken against those responsible.
