Central Karnataka Shivers as Davanagere and Chitradurga Record Decade-High Cold

There’s never been a cold wave like this in the two districts of Central Karnataka, which are notorious for heat and drought. These ‘sun-baked cities’ in the first week of January 2026 have become ‘chilling hubs,’ and temperatures have dropped to levels unknown in recent years. As per recent meteorological data, the temperature of all of these districts dipped to a bone-chilling 10 to 11°C, which means that it is very different from the normal climate.

A Freak Weather Phenomenon: From Heat to Shiver

The current weather in Central Karnataka is said by locals and experts to be "unusual". It seems odd for people to be in such a strange pattern: brief stretches of humidity and heat followed by biting winds and heavy dew, residents say.

The January Chill:

Even after the first week in January, the cold has not dissipated. The fog in the early morning is so thick it clouds view and keeps everyone indoors until late morning.

Meteorological Department:

This cold wave will worsen in the next five days with minimum temperatures nearing 10°C and maximums around 27°C. Regional Temperature Records Although other parts of Karnataka, like Vijayapura, Bidar, and Belagavi, are used to cold winters (often dipping below 10°C), a temperature drop in Davanagere and Chitradurga took the population by surprise.

District Low Temp (Recorded) The Forecast (5 Days)

  • Davanagere 11.3°C 10°C - 11°C
  • Chitradurga 11.8°C 10.5°C - 11°C
  • Bidar/Gadag 9.8°C 9°C - 10.5°C

Health Risks: Most at Risk

The sudden and chronic temperature drop in the twin districts has contributed to an increase in health-related issues. Seniors: The worst affected are those “in the evening of their lives,” who have had extreme joint pain, worsening arthritis, and respiratory distress.

Surge of Influenza:

Outpatient visits to local hospitals are up 40% for flu-like symptoms, cough and viral fevers. Doctors have warned cardiac patients not to take walks in the early morning, as extreme cold can cause blood vessel constriction, which can contribute to hypertension and heart attacks.

Daily Life Broken

The cold call is the phenomenon of "bone-melting", which has caused an incredible slowdown on life. Markets typically filled at 7:00 AM are now in the silent space till 10:00 AM. Farmers and outdoor laborers are especially struggling to take on the "suicidal chill" that comes with the early morning dew. As the districts prepare for another week of sub-normal temperatures, the health department has notified citizens to wear appropriate warm clothing and stay hydrated to resist the fluctuating weather.
