Chandigarh: The City Beautiful has had a record monsoon rainfall in recent months as 92.3 mm of rain lashed the city overnight, the city’s highest single-night rainfall in the past three years.
Not only did it inundate some low-lying places but it also saw a dramatic drop in temperatures, leading to Chandigarh’s coldest July night in six years.
The continuous rain cut down the minimum temperature considerably and gave a breather from the heat and humidity that has dominated the region for the past few weeks. Weather officials have said the intense rain was linked to an active monsoon system in northwest India.
The overnight downpour caused waterlogging in many areas of Chandigarh, with markets and residential colonies being flooded. Traffic was slow during the morning rush hour as people were stuck in flooded roads. Civic officials formed teams to clear the blocked drains and to ensure that water drains in affected areas were drained clear.
People liked the cooler weather, and they made do with the temporary inconvenience of waterlogging. So many parks and green areas in the city were revived after the heavy rain, and the sunny weather encouraged people to go out in the open once the rain subsided.

The rainfall was one of the most significant overnight monsoon events in recent years. The decrease in night temperature resulted in the coolest July night since 2020, which is a sign that the weather system affecting the region has been very strong.
The IMD forecast more intermittent rainfall for the next few days and monsoon conditions going to be more severe in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and adjacent areas. Citizens should be careful especially while driving in heavy rain and avoid waterlogged roads if possible.
Emergency response teams are on standby to respond to complaints of flooding, fallen trees and drainage problems. Water accumulation in heavy rainfall areas of the city will be monitored.
The rain will help recharge groundwater and increase moisture in the surrounding agricultural regions. But, if heavy rainfall continues, the threat of urban flooding will increase if drainage systems get overwhelmed, experts say.
According to weather experts, July usually receives fairly strong rainfall as part of the southwest monsoon but the intensity of the overnight rain is quite severe compared to recent years. The cold temperature drop has also made the weather unusually cool for this time of year.
Chandigarh is still experiencing active monsoon weather and residents should be up to date with official weather forecasts, plan travel ahead and be prepared for heavy rainfall. The rain has brought relief from the summer heat and civic organizations are working to prevent any disaster from a very heavy monsoon.
