A bomb threat received by Vivek High School in Chandigarh’s Sector 38 on Tuesday triggered a major security operation, with police, bomb detection teams and dog squads deployed to search the school premises. The alert led to the swift removal of students and staff from the school building and security personnel checking the campus.
Police said the threat was received from the authorities in the day and teams from Chandigarh Police were sent to the school. SHO Karan Singh, from the Sector 39 Police Station, said personnel immediately began checking the entire school building as a precautionary measure. Bomb detection teams and trained sniffer dogs were deployed to search parts of the premises.
The school administration acted immediately when they learned of the threat. Students and staff were put in safe places outside the main building and the security operation was conducted. Students who had come in with parents were sent home as a precaution.
The evacuation and search operation was a pre-emptive move that reflected the increased security measures brought in place by police when bomb threats are made against schools. Police will conduct detailed searches when the threat is not known to be a real threat to students, teachers or staff members.
The incident also caught people’s attention since it is just two days before Independence Day, when security arrangements are normally stepped up in Chandigarh and other parts of the country. At Vivek High School, the immediate priority was to keep students and staff safe. Moving people away from the building allowed bomb detection teams and police personnel to do their checks without any risks or interference. There were dog squads also in place to assist with the search operation.
Meanwhile, investigators are trying to determine the source of the latest threat and whether it was genuine. They will then look into the communication through which the threat was received and trace back its origin. The authenticity of the threat will only be proven after the security operation and investigation have been completed.
