Chennamma died in hospital while she was still under treatment. Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda was present at the hospital at her last moment. The news of her passing quickly spread in political and social circles, and family members, party leaders, and well-wishers converged at the hospital.

Some members of the Gowda family, including Bhavani Revanna and other relatives like Anasuya and Shailaja, were present at the hospital as well. The Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, son of H.D. Deve Gowda, arrived at the hospital soon after news of the death. The former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai visited the hospital to express his condolences to the bereaved family.

A Pillar of the Deve Gowda Family

Chennamma, who kept away from active politics, supported H.D. Deve Gowda throughout his remarkable political career. She was his bedrock from Karnataka politics to India’s prime minister, and she encouraged and supported the family.

Chennamma was the emotional backbone of the Gowda family life, often referred to as a humble person with a grounded personality. In spite of political duties that kept family members in the public eye, she preferred a private life of family values and social duty.

Her quiet strength and dedication helped the family through decades of political challenges and public scrutiny. In fact, people who knew her often spoke of her kindness, simplicity, and ability to maintain close relationships despite the pressures of political life.

A Life Rooted in Simplicity

Chennamma came from a traditional family in Karnataka, and she lived up to her values of humility and service all the same. Through all the years of fame and exposure of her family, she remained rooted in the place and lived a simple life.

Friends and associates often describe her as loving and caring, and deeply respected by family, party workers and supporters. Family and community events were often where she was most visible in her life, and very much part of her social life.

Condolences Pour In

Political leaders from all parties have since then been paying tribute to her for her life and contributions to their country. Party leaders from the JD(S), BJP, Congress, and other organisations have also expressed sorrow over her death.

Many leaders emphasised the sacrifices political families make and talked about the crucial role spouses play for public figures. Chennamma's life was one of dedication, patience, and commitment to family and public service.

End of an Era

Chennamma’s death marks the end of an important chapter for the Deve Gowda family. Her influence was far broader than the household; it was in the values and unity that have long defined one of Karnataka’s most prominent political families.

Chennamma will be remembered not for being in public office but for her strength, grace, and all the love she gave to her family throughout decades of public life.

Her death will leave a void in the lives of those who knew her personally and within the larger political community that has come to know her as one of the quiet but significant women. There will be more tributes forthcoming for Karnataka’s woman who stood beside one of India’s most influential political leaders throughout all the years she went through with him.
