Chikkamagaluru: Congress Leader Rahil Sharif Caught at Married Woman’s House; 6 Booked After Mob Assault

Tension ran through the Gandhinagar and Shankarapura zones in Chikkamagaluru on Thursday after Rahil Sharif, a senior local Congress leader and former Youth Congress District President, was reported to be caught at the home of a married Hindu woman late at night. It started on February 4, 2026, which then escalated into a confrontation that was followed by police action against multiple people.

THE INCIDENT: Midnight Confrontation

Rahil Sharif was seen entering the woman’s house in the Gandhinagar area, according to local reports and viral video footage. There’s evidence of suspects including a man in the evening, the woman’s estranged husband and residents who allegedly were following the incident were bursting into the home and found them in a compromising position in the bedroom. 

A group of local youths attacked Sharif and asked whether he was in the house the couple were reportedly in a compromising position. Sharif is being heckled and then physically assaulted in the videos shared on social media, before local authorities stepped in.

Conflicting Statements

The event has received vastly different accounts from the people involved:

  • Woman’s Defense: The woman posted a video statement saying she is longtime friends with Sharif. She said she was sick and called him to drop off medicine, contending that the “raid” was an intentional attempt to malign her character.
  • The Husband’s Claim: The woman’s husband refuted these claims, saying Sharif had arrived on his wife’s scooter, and they had locked the door behind them. He insists he caught them “red-handed” with the woman’s family coming to the scene.
  • Action by Police: 6 People Booked. As a result of the public disturbance and the viral videos, a suo motu case has been registered with the Chikkamagaluru City Police.
  • FIR DETAILS: A six-person case involving Rahil Sharif, the woman’s husband, and a number of local youngsters booked for the attack.

Charges

The accusation has been lodged under Section 194(2) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for infringing public peace and taking part in a fight in a public/residential area. Both the Congress party and the local right have not given a statement with regards to the actions of their leader and have described the incident as a “moral transgression,” adding another flare up in the warring political atmosphere in the district.
