A shocking case of violence took place in Chintamani town, the home of college students of Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur district, after the 18-year-old college student and her younger sister were brutally attacked by 10 men in their home. The attack occurred just hours after the college student confronted and slapped two youths who had allegedly harassed her on her way home from college.
The victims are Meghana (18) and her younger sister Niharika. Meghana had multiple stab wounds to her abdomen and neck, and Niharika was also seriously injured in the attack, the doctor told us.
The incident started earlier on Tuesday, when Meghana was returning home from college. The two local youths, Karthik and Vinod, harassed her by making inappropriate comments and repeatedly calling out to her while acting offensively, the police said.
Angered by the harassment, Meghana confronted the pair and slapped them before leaving home. She later told her mother about the incident.
Police believe that the attack on the sisters was retaliatory. Karthik and Vinod returned to the family's residence in Ashraya Layout, Chintamani, around 8:30 p.m. with a group of around 10 associates. Some of the accused, investigators believe, were under the influence of cannabis at the time of the incident, but this is still being investigated.
According to the preliminary investigation, the group forced entry into the family's home and launched a violent assault. The attackers first targeted Niharika before turning their attention to Meghana. Meghana was allegedly stabbed with a knife in the stomach and neck and was critically injured.
Family members and neighbours rushed the sisters to a nearby hospital immediately after the attack. Because of the serious nature of their injuries, both were taken to the Kolar District Hospital for more advanced medical treatment. Hospital authorities are monitoring their condition.
The brazen attack has sent shockwaves across Chintamani, and residents are concerned over the increasing violence against women. The fact that the assault took place inside the victims’ home has only increased residents’ fears of public safety.
The Chintamani City Police have registered an FIR against more than 10 suspects in the case. Cases have been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of unlawful assembly, criminal trespass, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, attempt to murder, intimidation, and other alleged offences. Additional charges can be added as the investigation continues.
Police teams are now going on a manhunt to find and arrest the suspects. Police will look at CCTV footage from the locality, collect forensic evidence from the crime scene, and record statements from family members, neighbours, and witnesses to reconstruct the whole story.
Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against everyone involved in the attack. Senior police officials also asked the public to take part in the investigation and to stop spreading information they don’t know on social media.
Those victims of harassment will be supported by the community’s anger and protest. Activists and residents want to see greater punishment for those who did this, better policing, and more protection against retaliation and violence.
